from the article Statically the vast majority of people with Down syndrome are happy, satisfied, and affectionate members of society—something that couldn’t be said of people born without the disability.

In Iceland, I don’t think they are actually called “babies” prior to birth. Too complicated, ya’kno.

There is going to be alot of downward pressure on the world population in the next 50-100 years, both natural and artificial. There is more of this to come.

I think the same thing happened with the various forms of dwarfism.

They speak as if Down Syndrome will cease to exist when it will actually become statistically more likely as women delay childbearing until later years.

My cousin, because she was in her thirties when she started having children, was advised to have an amniocentesis and other tests during her first pregnancy. They came back positive for Down Syndrome. She decided to have the baby. Today, he is a healthy, athletic 17-year-old and, you guessed it, does not have Down Syndrome.

I guess they have no doctors in Iceland.
From the Hippocratic Oath:
“Neither will I administer a poison to anybody when asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a course. Similarly I will not give to a woman a pessary to cause abortion.
... Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. Above all, I must not play at God.”

Amniocentesis will determine whether or not a child has Down syndrome and is considered the "gold standard" of testing, Carver said. That test is typically about 99 percent accurate.

I would hate to be in the 1% that is misdiagnosed...

George Will's 45 year old son:

Jon Will, George Will's Mongoloid Son

As much as I dislike George Will's slippery neocon politics, he did right by his son Jon.

Iceland has become the first nation to boast of eradicating Down syndrome from its country.

You may have eliminated those afflicted, you have not eliminated the genetic marker for it.

Just by way of hard numbers, given a rate of about 1 in 800 for Down Syndrome births, and annual births of about 4500 in Iceland, this is about 8 or 9 instances.

Lots and lots of love snuffed out. Love is what life is all about. It is it’s truest commodity. God is love. A life lived without love has been lived in vain.
