U.S. Navy strike group to move toward Korean peninsula: U.S. official

A U.S. Navy strike group will be moving toward the western Pacific Ocean near the Korean peninsula as a show of force, a U.S. official told Reuters on Saturday, as concerns grow about North Korea’s advancing weapons program. Earlier this month North Korea tested a liquid-fueled Scud missile which only traveled a fraction of its range.

The strike group, called Carl Vinson, includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore toward the Korean peninsula, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak to the media and requested anonymity. “We feel the increased presence is necessary,” the official said, citing North Korea’s worrisome behavior.

The news was first reported by Reuters. In a statement late Saturday, the U.S. Navy’s Third Fleet said the strike group had been directed to sail north, but it did not specify the destination. The military vessels will operate in the Western Pacific rather than making previously planned port visits to Australia, it added.

If we hit North Korea, then the question is will they use 2 and 1/4 million men to invade Seoul, South Korea through the tunnels they dug?

My understanding is the Seoul is about 35 miles from the DMZ. The only way to stop a 2 and 1/4 million men from invading Seoul is with a Tactical nuke. Perhaps additional nuke in Pyongyang to cut off the leadership?

The only alarming question is not so much North Korea, but going to war with China. They are not going to like us dropping nukes next door to them.

If we could deploy Delta or a Seal Team to take out the leadership. Avoid the bloodshed.

I have read that the entire South Korea peninsula was designed for a feigned retreat.

I think the south knows about the tunnels and probably has defenses for them. Plus satellite imagery will let them know where north forces are going.

Maybe the US should sell South Korea and Taiwan an Ohio class sub, with 2-4 nukes on each. That will shutdown China and the Norks.

Well, you if you did, he still has a chain of command.

But yeah, though sending them in like that reminds me of Jimmy Carter. A better way may be to use up all of our outdated arsenal munitions to keep pounding until we get him. In the mean time he won't be doing much because the phone line will be out of order.

His personality is clearly the problem and it is starting to look more like real danger, more than just internal political workings.

Alas, the Chinese are probably thinking the same things he is thinking, but, they are smart enough to keep the mouth shut and they are motivated by wanting profitable trade and business opportunity.

Sounds like your point is well made, in the sense that the world would be a better place without him

Some have said that but what then, the Russians give nukes to Iran?

It's out of the question.

It was one of his major points during the campaign.

He was even interviewed a couple of times when asked if he would ____________ (I actually forget the question(s) .. ) .... and he answered, "I'm not going to tell you ... if I do, then you'll know and I don't want you to know"

I hope they are extra heavy with their asub operations.

Remember the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan.

“Send Dennis Rodman to make nice.”

Or do what Billy Boy clinton did, he sent Jimmy Carter, and North Korea got lots of “gifts” from the U.S. of A and all we got was a promise that North Korea would put away their nuclear toys. Boy that worked out well didn’t it?

As a veteran of the 2nd ID I would say it wont be that easy for them.

They have about 700K regulars, rest reserves.

The tunnels might cross the DMZ but then they emerge into the open.

Terrain is mountainous. The corridor to Seoul is urbanized now and will be difficult to traverse quickly. And the ROK army is no pushover.

If they don’t establish air supremacy at the onset their ground formations will get slaughtered.

Not saying it wont be messy but I don’t see them getting to Seoul.

You honestly believe moving an entire battle group could possibly remain a secret?
