“The federal pool, which would be funded with $15 billion, would be replaced by individual state-run high-risk pools in 2020. “

I’m not sure actually, that the GOP should at all start to pare back that fund.

Really.

Sure, remove the feds from otherwise covering things, but as for the portion of insurance which others will not cover, I think it would be a BIG mistake, to try to remove coverage from anyone.

I am frankly, very puzzled by how many are opposed to this. It seems very basic, to me.

If someone can not get coverage elsewhere, the government should absolutely, step in.

100%.

Otherwise people will try to go on Medicaid which is not really what Medicaid is for.

First, let the states handle it. There is no reason for doing this at the federal level.

Second, “pre-existing conditions and critical illnesses” will eventually cover hangnails, birth control for horny college students, and sex changes, and we will be pumping ten trillion into this thing.

Finally, the only people who will really benefit will be politically connected minority groups and illegal aliens. Productive citizens can apply and wait until they drop dead. Kind of like veterans.

That is the political reality and all the good intentions in the world won’t change it.

We can either pay for them through higher premiums or pay for them via taxes. Helluva choice. The result is the same. I’m still paying for my own plus other people’s health care.
Why is that my responsibility?

I wonder morally about the premise that the poor generally must stay poor to get Medicaid coverage, but those with high risks should have their healthcare paid by the government (taxpayers) without having their assets drawn down.

Does that seem right?
