Pence story reaction shows Christians face double standard
Union Leader ^ | 4/2/17 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 04/03/2017 11:01:08 PM PDT by 198ml

I've heard many versions of this story, but I’ll go with the one reportedly told by Dr. Abraham Twerski, a renowned psychiatrist and Orthodox rabbi. (I’ve trimmed and paraphrased it a bit.)

The bearded Twerski goes to the airport in his Hasidic garb — the hat, the long coat, the buttoned white shirt. Another Jew, this one modernly dressed, is annoyed by Twerski and unloads on him: “What’s wrong with you? Must you insist on parading around in that medieval get-up as if it were Purim? Don’t you realize how ridiculous you look? You bring nothing but scorn and embarrassment upon us Jews!”

After letting the angry man continue for a while, Twerski says, “I fail to understand what thee art saying. You do realize that I’m Amish, don’t you?”

When I was a professor I’d never hired a female grad student as a TA. I never said why I didn’t out loud, I just didn’t. If a male TA is bad, incompetent or lazy you just don’t renew the contract at the end of the semester. If you do that to a female TA she can scream sexual harassment. Even without evidence your career is ruined. I’ve seen it happen.

I am not saying it happens often, but it happens enough that I didn’t take the chance and hire women. I didn’t meet with female students in my office either. If they needed to talk to me we talked in the hall.

Part of this was also that I did not want any doubt about my relationship with my wife.

Misogynist unite!

In this article, the logic Jonah Goldberg uses to defend Mike Pence is flawless and impeccable, which is why liberals will utterly fail to learn anything from it.

from the article: "You do realize that I’m Amish, don’t you?"

I read Goldberg's article, and get his point, but the story loses a bit of its punch when you know that real Amish don't dress like that, don't talk like that and would never be caught using an airport.

As a female, I would never eat out w/ a male friend/colleague w/out his wife’s being invited (or my better half), or unless it’s a work thing in which all are invited.

It’s about respect: for self, for my better half, the male & his wife. It’s about being above reproach.

According to my fella, I’m risk-adverse to the point of paranoia about home security. Had to crack down on him not leaving his keys in the double-cylinder when we leave home, got ticked off when he thinned out the brush that prevented passerby lookie-loos... and other adjustments to playing house together.

Why value our relationship less? or a pleasant work environment?

There’s nothing to account for if there’s not even the possibility. This seems a little old fashioned to me at forty-mumble years old. But it’s also reassuring.

I agree w/ the Chinese. Excitement is over-rated; I don’t want to live an interesting life. Ease & comfort are more my speed.

“There’s nothing to account for if there’s not even the possibility.”

This.
If it can’t happen, then neither can accusations that it did.

Double standard? It’s civil war, we’re the designated enemy, and anything that can be used against us will be. The Left wants equality & diversity by eliminating us and the possibility of our views; once our kind is gone, they’ll enjoy equality & diversity of permitted survivors.

Demonstrating, of course, the utter stupidity of the left.

Do ya’ think so? Public schools are teaching about islam... how to be a muslim.. but not allowed to read the Bible or teach about Christianity. Yea, it’s been going on before VP Pence. And it’s a way to lose our country!

From the article - “He thinks a meal with any woman will lead to sex!”
Isn’t that what a lot of men have had in mind for a long time? I know - and admit - that in my younger days, I sure did.

“I fail to understand what thee art saying..."

This should read: "...what thou art saying..."

  1. thou is nominative (subject)
  2. thee is dative/accusative (object, indirect or direct)

The Amish are not their stereotype. Years ago when the Champaign, Illinois Best Buy was new, I saw an Amish fellow roaming the electronics section to choose and buy a scanner. Due to a population higher than the local available land will support on the farm, they are building fine furniture, kitchen cabinets and houses for non-Amish in the area. Computers and electronics for businesses do not seem to be a problem.

When you hold yourself to a higher standard, other will too.

But it doesnt stop me from pointing out the fact that they feel it is necessary to point out my failings yet act offended when I point out that the only reason they do not hold themselves in the same light, is due to their lower moral view and standards that hey have of themselves.

Others are seldom the reason for your woes.

Western Phil: "The Amish are not their stereotype."

I don't know what their "stereotype" is, but I used to say there is no such thing as New Order Amish, because by definition, once someone becomes New Order they are no longer Amish.
Relatively recently, I learned that's not really true, there are some who call themselves New Order Amish.
Not many, maybe one tenth of one percent of all Amish, but if an Amish church district declares itself "New Order", they can do that.

However... one reason there are so few New Order is because most in such a district will soon either leave and become non-Amish entirely or they will return to an Older Order church.
Historically, New Order church districts don't last long.

As for Amish businesses, even in very rural areas the majority are not farmers but work in other manufacturing (i.e., sawmills, cabinet making) or services (construction, store-keeping, etc.).
Some districts permit certain electronics for their businesses, but not in their homes.
