WASHINGTON (AP) Week by week, country by country, the Pentagon is quietly seizing more control over warfighting decisions, sending hundreds more troops to war with little public debate and seeking greater authority to battle extremists across the Middle East and Africa.
This week it was Somalia, where President Donald Trump gave the U.S. military more authority to conduct offensive airstrikes on al-Qaida-linked militants. Next week it could be Yemen, where military leaders want to provide more help for the United Arab Emirates' battle against Iranian-backed rebels. Key decisions on Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan are looming, from ending troop number limits to loosening rules that guide commanders in the field.
The changes in President Donald Trump's first two months in office underscore his willingness to let the Pentagon manage its own day-to-day combat. Under the Obama administration, military leaders chafed about micromanagement that included commanders needing approval for routine tactical decisions about targets and personnel moves.

And the downside of letting the military to do its job is what?
Still waiting for congressional war authorization, waiting, waiting, waiting.
“...with little public debate...”
There is no “public debate” when it comes to protecting Americans or American interests...
Islam delenda est!
PRESIDENT TRUMP is plugging the leaks.
This is the ‘effing stupidity of having open-ended military commitments approved by Congress. All of these globalist wars are beings carried out under Congressional authorization that dates back to 9/11.
Yeeessss!
At long last, a real CIC. Just unleash our fighting forces, they know what to do.
The corrupting influence of the Middle East on our military cannot be overstated. Americans have little understanding of how bad it truly is. We are in bed with terrorists and tyrants, and everyone from the Whitehouse to the lowliest E-1 refuses to speak the truth:
There is absolutely nothing redeeming in the entire Muslim world.
Don’t know,it’s kinda like their job.
There’s that liberal word again, “warfighting”. Just say “military”. Too much liberal inspired jargon has infiltrated our troops.
It’s like George Carlin said:
Shell Shock —> Battle Fatigue —> Operational Exhaustion —> Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
I’m tired of liberals redefining our lanugauge.
Oh, the misleading “wording” contained in this one “news” article. All meant to inflame.
.... his willingness to let “The Pentagon” manage its own day-to-day combat. (As though a building were in charge)!
Im tired of liberals redefining our lanugauge.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Redefinition of words is absolutely essential to the overall indoctrination program of the left. But don’t tell that to the homosexuals, I mean the GAYS!
We are a republic where the decisions on war and peace should be in the hands of the people through Congress, not in the hands of an unelected military. The founding fathers established a constitutional Republic, not a military empire. Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress the power and responsibility to declare war.
That is a swamp bay that needs immediate draining.
Texas floods: 9 soldiers killed in Fort Hood accident
That to me is a downside. Those nine soldiers died not due to a plane or helicopter crash. Or a Muslim 'soldier' got hold of a gun and killed them. No, to me it was incompetence of military of them being in that flood zone.
Now the same military is managing soldiers in war zones, i dont like it. I see from the responses other Freepers dont either. I want more civilian oversight and control.
>> sending hundreds more troops to war with little public
Yeah well, the jerks in the previous Administration destabilized the ME without public approval.
Dead and broken soldiers?
The military is for killing and destroying...we would still be in WWII if we didn’t let the military to it’s JOB
