In a stark contrast to statements from the Barack Obama administration, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Thursday that the future of the Bashar al-Assad regime “will be decided by the Syrian people.” Tillerson made the remarks at a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in response to a reporter’s question about Assad.

“The previous administration said that Syrian President Assad must go,” the reporter asked. “Nikki Haley said yesterday that the fight in Syria cannot move forward without the issue of Assad being resolved. How do you see that issue being moved forward as you move more aggressively on Raqqa?”

After Tillerson explained that the U.S. faced “difficult choices” when it came to Syria, the reporter followed up.

“About President Assad, should he stay or should he go?” the reporter asked.

I don’t really see how that’s supposed to work (the Syrian people deciding), but I approve of the change in policy.

The “Syrian people” right now, unfortunately, would choose a hard core Islamic regime. Screw the Syrian people. We need to support Assad and NOT create another power vacuum in the ME.

Assad is scum but he keeps the worse scum in check.

I think Tillerson is living in fantasy land. This administration does not understand islam. They think terrorism is the problem.

this is absolutely the right policy for the US.

In fact, I would go further and say we should be supporting the existing regime in acquiring and maintaining sovereignty over their entire country.

As long as Israel keeps him in check.

This is a good point. Saddam Baath members were top member of ISiS and I would expect Assad to join them in the end too. Kurds regularly found workers on Assad’s payroll man the Isis refineries

The bad part is that Syria is a colonial district. It whould not be about removing Assad and more about breaking up Syria. There is no way imperialist arabs ruling Kurds would go well.

George Washington said to keep out of other nations’ affairs, and we go to the nastiest, ickest, most intransigent parts of the world and play globalist missionaries.
