I-85 collapses after massive fire: ‘The entire bridge is compromised’
Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | 3/31/17 | Ellen Eldridge and Raisa Habersham

Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency Thursday night after fire officials extinguished a massive fire on I-85 in Atlanta that led to the collapse of a bridge on the crowded interstate.

The bridge on I-85 northbound just south of Ga. 400 near Piedmont Road collapsed about 7 p.m., Atlanta fire spokesman Sgt. Cortez Stafford confirmed.

No injuries to motorists or first responders were reported.

Officials said they still don't know how long it will take to fix the bridge, but they agree there is no underestimating the headache that awaits commuters.

(snip)

He said the cause of the fire is not yet known but “the speculation I’ve heard is that there are some PVC products that caught fire.”

I feel for commuters coming from the north. ATL traffic is always ugly, this is going to be a nightmare for a long, long time...

Kind of like when LA Northridge earthquake caused the 10m freeway to collapse on La Cienega. Took a year to rebuild. Had to take surface streets to / from work everyday. A big pain.

Fake news!

NOT a bridge, it is an elevated roadway. What ever happened to journalism?

This will require motorists to seek alternate routes.

Those materials belong to the state DOT, and are used for road construction (cameras, electronic signs, toll sensors, etc.).

Attacks like this accident could have huge economic consequences. Doesn’t have to be Extreme Islamic terrorists. It could be home grown insurrection from Soros’s 5th column.

Here's a shot before things got WAY out of control.

Last night a local news outlet was reporting that it was an accident. I don’t see how PVC can accidentally combust.

He says "thank you" for the insight:

Local news also reported that the FBI was on scene. For an accident.

If there was any steel that melted, someone should contact famed metallurgist Rosie O'Donnell, since it would be the second time in history that fire has ever melted steel.

One alternate route is what truckers refer to as the ring around the Congo, 285. And a much safer option than surface streets. The elevated Roads have a impetus.

These are bad times for Atlanta area motorists. Very bad times. I prescribe a SiriusXM radio subscription. Just crank up the music in your favorite genre while you endure the endless stop-and-go.

Or some 'homeless'; whose campfire got outta control. They'd built a nest back behind the spools of plastic pipe.

Oh yeah. When I was stationed at Robins (93-96), I'd drive through Hotlanta on a regular basis (parents in Greenville SC). It was ugly 24 years ago...can't even imagine how nasty it is now under NORMAL circumstances, much less with the main north-south freeway down for the long term. This will be worse than the 35-W bridge collapse in Minneapolis -- there were plenty of other options in that case...not so, here.

BTW, in regards to SiriusXM...iHeartRadio is free.

"underestimating"?

Perhaps the journalism major meant "overestimating".
