Get ready to pay more at the pump; California's gas taxes could see 43 percent hike

California’s governor and legislative leaders on Wednesday proposed raising $52 billion to fix the state’s roads through a big gasoline tax increase, higher car registration fees and a charge on emission-free vehicles.

The 10-year plan would boost gasoline excise taxes for the first time in more than two decades, raising them 12 cents per gallon — a 43 percent increase. The tax would rise automatically with inflation.

For the first time, owners of zero emission vehicles would pay a $100 annual fee because they use public roads but don’t pay gasoline taxes that fund highway maintenance.

The plan also includes a sliding fee on vehicles, with owners of cheaper vehicles paying less. The fee, separate from annual vehicle registration fees, would range from $25 a year for vehicles worth less than $5,000 to $175 for cars worth $60,000 and up.

Gov. Jerry Brown said the plan would cost most drivers less than $10 per month and would be offset by reduced vehicle-repair expenses. The governor and Democratic legislative leaders hope to rush it through the Legislature next week.

“Yes, it costs money. And if the roof in your house is leaking, you better fix it, because it gets worse all the time,” Brown said at a Capitol news conference. “This is mostly about fixing what we already have. If for some reason people try to fight this, and God help us if they were successful, they won’t defeat this, they’ll just delay it and make the expenses go up.”

This is going to have one hell of an impact on California's "poor, hardworking, 'immigrant' families". They will be hurt the worst.

sarc/ I really haven't seen any articles from the Bolshies yet whining about that.

they’ll need more than that, with all the foo-foo cars in california going farther on a tank of gas or using no gas at all.

Just to be clear - i drive a foo-foo car. I did the math and all things considered, it was cheaper to drive a foo-foo car.
Gas is now $2.50 a gallon here.

I’m looking to foo-foo up -> at the Hyundai Ioniq - 59 MPG

Sooner or later, Obamaphones and EBT cards will be accompanied by gas cards...for the children, of course.

HA! For what we pay in gas taxes, car registration fees, bridge tolls, etc., our roads should be paved with gold.

Instead, our roads are paved with potholes.

The Oroville Dam spillway is smoother than some sections of I-80 between Sackatomatoes and Sam Franthithco.

Double suckers (who are being lied to).

In a state like California that doesn’t really have a lot of weather related road degradation (freeze/thaw cycle of water in the cracks), the bulk of road wear is likely caused by trucks, and trucks alone.

Cars, especially econobox plug in cars, put very little wear on the road.

Yet another reason for me to buy a motorcycle. (use of the carpool lane when commuting being another big reason)

Step 2 will be to get the heck out of California in the next few years.

As the numbers of cars on the road have gone up, the amount of gas tax receipts has gone up. Oops, forgot to mention that in your presentation Governor Moonbeam.

Sure cars get better mileage today. That was what you wanted ace. You got it, and now you’re not happy about it. LOL You’re even willing to fine the zero emitters.

For a long time, California didn’t seem to be doing anything with it’s roads. In the last decade or so, they’ve been doing some projects. Now they seem to think that they should do more. So do/have we.

Now the tax dollars stolen for light rail and other projects isn’t there any longer. Well guess what, the roads still need to be fixed.

So now it’s on to toll roads or increasing the gas tax funds. It just never ends, the malfeasance, the excuses, and shafting the public.

I’m sure they’ll raise funds by selling bonds too. California will raise more debt, just what is needed.

Those public pensions are coming due...

Incentive to buy emission free cars now a liability. With those new taxes CA will finally come to a screeching halt with the largest whiners being the liberals who wanted it in the first place; taxing personal vehicles out of existence; but then, few vehicles, less road wear and less need for fixing up existing roads. Guess that fixed that problem.

Don't worry, these virtue signaling creatures will craft legislation in order to subsidize and shield illegals with tax credits as well as prepaid debit "fuel" cards so they will not be burdened by this increase.
