Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deliberately targeted Austin, Texas after talks between the agencys officials and local authorities went awry, U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew Austin said during a public court session Tuesday. Immigration officials reported at least 50 people were arrested in Austin typically described as a sanctuary city for its welcoming stance on immigration early last month after a federal crackdown began following President Donald Trumps inauguration.
The raids began after Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez met with an ICE field office director to discuss the federal governments new immigration guidelines under Trump.
Instead of working with federal agencies to comply with an increase in immigrant detentions and deportations nationwide, Hernandez created a policy limiting the cooperation between local law enforcement and immigration officials.
The judge said he was warned by immigration officials that the city "could expect a big operation, agents coming in from out of town" that was "a result of the sheriffs new policy, that this was going to happen" when questioning ICE agent Laron Bryant Tuesday.
"Thats the one we heard about where 50-some-odd people were arrested," Judge Austin said. "My understanding is, what was told us is, one of the reasons that [the raid] happened is because the meetings that had occurred between the field office director and the sheriff didn't go very well."

There’s the problem in three words: SHERIFF SALLY HERNANDEZ!
LOCK. HER. UP!
In your face ICE, you will do almost NOTHING in Austin and get away with it. Empty words, little action.
Not tired of winning; thank God for this miracle and pray without ceasing for wisdom, understanding, and knowledge for President Trump and all his team to protect and defend our nation that we may live in peace and safety to worship God and bless our neighbors in this country and throughout the world.
This may make it hard for the Bolshies to get elected in Austin if all of their voters are deported.
This whole “sanctuary city” think can be easily handled by using linguistic legerdemain.
Just make it clear that “Sanctuary City”=”ICE Magnet.”
Get the word out there is a direct correlation between a city’s reticence to cooperate and the feds and the scope and size of the federal enforcement efforts there.
They will flee.
Make it 50 per week now, and then 50 per day soon - for Austin, TX, and for many other cities. We need to rack up large numbers continuously to get to 11+ million.
Conduct raids AND cut off federal funding.
I don’t know how many federal dollars go to Austin or where. I expect a significant amount go to the University of Texas at Austin, and also to the city itself. So stopping the flow of dollars may get the attention of the offending parties.
Sanctuary city takes beating news gets better by the day.
She’s probably an illegal herself.
Keeping Sanctuary Weird
I just hope that, as they are sending these people out of the USA, they are checking their names/addresses against every list of entitlement benefits, to make sure their food stamps, Medicaid, rent assistance, free cell phones, etc. are stopped IMMEDIATELY. If so, we should see the costs of those programs dropping very soon.
“Theres the problem in three words: SHERIFF SALLY HERNANDEZ!”
Beat me to it.
I remember a time before America lost its mind.
SUE SALLY HERNANDEZ
Put the sheriff behind bars.
Austin schools were handing out pamphlets on how to avoid ICE. Put every one who aides and abets in jail.
“target rich environment”
As a Texan, I invite you to come back to Austin, every day, if you want to.
Someone posted recently about 23% of the school students were foreign (read illegal). Just look at the temporary buildings at most schools.
I live in the DC area and I think eleven million live in the DC area alone.
