They’re slave laborers. They take in mentally retarded and other people with disabilities and pay them a stipend of $1.70 an hour. What happened to $15 an hour? How do they get away with paying people less than they did a hundred years ago?
One more thing. Where do you donate beside badwill?

My wife was shocked to learn that a couple of years back. She stopped donating items when she also learned that almost all their employees were minimum wage and part time.
