The White House is launching a commission to combat drug addiction that will be overseen by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), who for years has been a passionate voice on the scourge of drug abuse.

Trump and Christie led a listening session on the subject at the White House on Wednesday, convening Attorney General Jeff Sessions and several other Cabinet members, drug policy experts and advocates, as well as a recovering addict.

“Opioid abuse has become a crippling problem throughout the United States,” Trump said at the session. “This is a total epidemic. And I think it's almost untalked-about compared to the severity that we're witnessing.”

Ending opioid addiction was a centerpiece of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, as well as Christie's, and advisers say the president is committed to using the powers of his office to raise awareness and develop new policies to tackle the problem.

The Congress could make buprenorphine/naloxone prescription refills unlimited.

Alternately, federal law could be changed so any doctor or physician assistant can renew buprenorphine-naloxone prescriptions.

The combination works well for many people and needs to be readily available.

I’m surprised there’s enough meat on that bone that Trump just tossed to Christie.

I hope they’re successful. We can’t MAGA with a huge population of people strung out on drugs.

“Ending opioid addiction”

It’s been around since Adam & Eve.

Apples are found in orchards.

The Biblical “apple” of the Garden of Eden is of the opium poppy.

Chuck Scummer will call for Christie to recuse himself.

John McCainiac will call on Christie to resign, saying “Russia. Russia. Russia. This is unprecedented and very troubling. Russia.”

Opium poppys made us realize we were naked, and become ashamed?

Hell, most of the girls I was with (when I was 'out there') dropped clothing the minute they got high. LOL

Hint to Christi: Look for secret compartments under the floorboards in the rooms Malia and Sasha slept in. Oh, check the Oval office too.

Recreational drugs punish their users.

I don’t think the government needs to add to the punishment for simple usage that is not a danger to others.

The war on drugs needs to go the way of alcohol prohibition.

People should be able to sell/buy the less dangerous forms for each brain chemical system, say:
1. a cocaine/cola beverage for the dopamine system
2. variably colored codeine beverages for the opioid receptor system(green: non-lethal for novices, yellow: likely to harm novices, red: sure to kill novices)

Rehab except for alcohol is normally a failure.

Addiction to recreational drugs is generally for a lifetime.

I saw that the same pharmaceuticals that lobbied against medical marijuana have come out with their own more expensive synthetic version of it. I’m sure it is much safer than a plant.

Maybe this problem can be addressed differently than in the past. Get rid of criminalization and focus on treatment.

There's too many jail cells right now filled with people serving mandatory minimums for drug offenses, and the result is that violent criminals being released back into the streets instead.

I'll be very interested to see the approach here, because if it's just the predictable authoritarian move towards more draconian prohibition laws and enforcement, it will have the same impotent results as have been seen over the last century or more.

Additionally, nobody who is suffering from chronic pain should have to have a sh!t quality of life just because someone else is irresponsible and stupid...

On a more serious note, I find it hard to believe that Christie was offered other positions in the Trump administration, as he has claimed, because he was waiting for a nothing burger like this - a powerless position under the son of someone he had locked up. He must really want out of New Jersey and apparently private industry isn’t interested.
