Trump to meet China’s Xi first week in April, senior State Department official says

WASHINGTON – Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet with President Donald Trump the first full week of April, a senior State Department official said Tuesday.

The first in-person encounter between the leaders comes after Trump sharply criticized China during the presidential campaign. But he is now seeking Beijing’s help in pressuring North Korea over its nuclear weapons and missile programs.

Trump and Xi also are likely to discuss the U.S. president’s threats to counter what he claims are unfair Chinese trade practices. Trump has promised to raise import taxes on Chinese goods and declare Beijing a currency manipulator. It’s unclear if Trump will follow on either threat while seeking China’s cooperation on North Korea.

Though the White House hasn’t formally announced Xi’s visit, the leaders are expected to gather at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida — where Trump hosted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in February.

Sounds good to me....especially in light of N.Korea. Certainly Trump will handle Pres. XI very well...likely his wife will be along and Melania will have an interesting time with her.

Am confident in both Trump and Melania playing host to this visit in Mar-largo...and best they do so there IMO. rather than Washington.

'Delegates' repeatedly referred to Xi Jinping as “core leader of the (Chinese Communist) party.”... That was NOT done in the past for his predecessor, Hu Jintao......... However, the term core leader of the party was used years ago for former leaders Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.

Willy Lam studies China’s leadership. He stated that the description of Xi as 'a core leader' means he will be in power a long time.........“So having been designated the core leader, that means he is virtually emperor for life, and that is the message Xi Jinping wants to tell the Chinese people and leaders of other countries, that he will be around to guide the realization of the Chinese Dream,” Lam said.

The “Chinese Dream” is a term used by Xi when he took power in 2012. The saying means "the redevelopment of the nation"....

(Perhaps Trump and Xi have common ground in respect of where they each are in rebuilding their nations....)

Interesting.....the Chinese president plans to stay at the Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa in Manalapan....fencing will be going up around the area ... Lantana will lose about 80 percent of its beach parking for those two days....I suppose he will have his own security and desires his own ‘space’.

..Consider also..the Chinese typically do not engage in “informal” talks so Trump needs to be on mark. Xi is highly sensitive about electronic security and he has huge trust issues.

It’s highly possible Xi will raise his concerns about Taiwan, so I suspect Trump will be counseled to stand firm on that and be quick to move on from there because Taiwan policy non-negotiable.

My understanding of how the Chinese operate is they know their talking points and will stick to them. They have no problem repeating those talking points ad infinitum. And we have heard Trump say the Chinese are tough negotiators so he has acquired some experience in dealing with them.

They’re tough also because even a hint of agreeing with them on issues they will take it as supporting their position. They do so because they always drag them out at a later date,( presented in such a way as though the US is not trustworthy and breaks agreements,) when it serves their purposes to do so.

What I;m also reading in foreign Asian news...is that of how quickly this meeting was arranged....many question this highly as this type of meeting , between super powers is generally planned months ahead....how quick this happened has brought much curoisty and concerns.

If they make a scene as they did during their visit to UK, put them into place. No repainting of room with red and no consideration for Feng Shui. If possible, block every path where positive force is supposed to flow with giant Trump portraits. Helps to show who is in charge.

When Trump visits China in future, keep his jet's engines running after the plane touched down. If they let him wait for more than 15 minutes, roll out and fly away.
