Oakland’s embattled fire chief will retire May 5, five months after the deadly Ghost Ship warehouse inferno raised questions about management and inspection procedures in the Fire Department, city leaders said Tuesday.

Teresa Deloach Reed, 59, became the first African American woman to lead the fire department of a major U.S. city when she took the post in 2012 after working as an assistant chief in San Jose.

Deloach Reed, who couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday, has gone on and off leave in the last several months, giving most of her responsibilities to Deputy Chief Mark Hoffmann.

You worthless pile of affirmative action crap. 39 people have died including 3 today because you could not carry out your responsibilities. Now you are hiding out and still collecting your mega buck salary and will be demanding you mega buck life time pension. What a waste of skin.

She did her job. I am absolutely sure the fire department was told to let all code violations slide for that building.

To be fair that amount of money is nothing in the bay area.
Still she was negligent.

An effective fire chief requires a hose.

How about a different retirement pay scheme?

Start with say about $500K per year.

Subtract off of that for each fire on their watch, more for the larger fires.

No fires, you are rich, and deserve it.

Maybe this would be an incentive for ‘fire safety’.

I’m surprised Pelosi let this up and coming star fail.

You can get away with anything in Pelosi’s back yard if you donate right.

She almost had to retire. It has been clear from Dec, 4th 2016, the morning of the Ghost Ship fire that this lady was in over her head. 36 people dead in a fire that occurred in a downtown warehouse that had not been fully inspected in 30 years. From what I hear, she didn’t know how to delegate duties to others, and was reluctant to listen to other firefighters. Many professional disputes would be ended with her implying those who opposed her were probably racist. You can only play that card so much these days, even in California.

The root cause of the problem is right there in black and white print.

Oakland’s problems go way beyond this one ‘public servant’. Oakland is a large, filthy, high crime, poorly managed city, and it’s gone way downhill in the last decade. Aside from nuking it from orbit, it’s difficult to even know where to start.

From the day this tragedy occurred I have wondered why criminal charges have not been brought against this chief and others in the city government.

Oakland will get itself together when Lagos, or Kinshasa, or Monrovia get themselves together.

Which is to say, never.
