The wife of former Alabama GOP Chairman Bill Armistead was killed in a traffic accident Thursday morning.

Armistead made the announcement on Facebook late Thursday night, saying he had lost the love of his life. He and his wife, Emily, were preparing to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary.

Efforts to reach law enforcement officials for details of the accident weren't immediately successful. The West Alabama Watchman reported that the couple was crossing Highway 43 in Linden when she was struck. She was taken to Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis, where she was pronounced dead.

According to publication, the Armisteads were attending the funeral of 93-year-old Paul Owensby - the longtime, retired owner of Papa's Grocery Store in Linden and a WWII veteran.

"He posted this on Facebook about 10:30 p.m. Thursday: "It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I lost the love of my life today in a tragic automobile accident. Emily and I would have been married 49 years on April 6th and I thank God for giving me the woman that He created to be my wife for these wonderful years. And, there could not have been a better wife, mother and grandmother in all the world.

Now, Emily is with Jesus for all of eternity where I look forward to joining her at God's chosen time. Thanks to my many friends who have heard the news today and I am sorry I haven't been able to respond to all. I felt this was the best way to get the word out to as many as possible. We covet your prayers.

"The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." Job 1:21"

Very sorry for the loss.

I googled the church view and could see a very small town, two lane country highway runs in front of the church lawn and drive way(s).

The funeral the couple was attending must have been large enough that they were caused to park across the street (highway).

There appears to be virtually no traffic on the little highway, in this google photo- maybe taken on a Sunday- but nevertheless left the impression she may have stepped out thinking there was no traffic, or was in between cars parallel parked for the funeral and simply didn’t have perfect awareness a moving car was coming.

Perhaps it was another funeral attendant car. Just too bad such a thing like this would have to happen. Very sorry.

This is a small town. Probably a 2 or 4 lane road, not an interstate highway.

In small towns, cemeteries often border highway. They were attending the funeral of a friend and were crossing the highway to get to their car. Very sad.

Hmmm..Are we not taught to look both ways prior to crossing the street?

I’ve always been amazed by people walking across roads, who get hit by vehicles. Cars can be seen and heard. At night they have these big headlights.

I’d bet if more folks could someone who’d gone under the wheels, they’d think twice about willie nillie crossing in front of traffic. Once one sees that, they never forget.

In many small towns, the main street is technically a highway.

If they’ve been married 49 years, clearly they were both elderly. Probably slow. Probably looking to make sure the other got across. Who knows, maybe a car came in one direction, which they saw while another sailed by going the other way.

Have you not had elderly family members trying to negotiate the simple logistics of latter life?

Bottom line, if you cannot cross the road without be brutally killed by a speeding vehicle, it should never be attempted. There are no second chances here. They found out the hard way. And I say this with confidence.

Even if you’re in the right, such as having the light and using a cross walk, you’ll be dead right if your not paying attention. Btw, I see people all the time crossing roads, without even looking at approaching traffic. That’s suicide in my opinion. Industrial strenght stupidity.

Agreed. Saw a motorcyclist once who had had an SUV rollover on top of him. Horrible.

Another time I was commuting home and traffic was crawling. Finally got up past what was going on in the other lane and all my pissed off drained clean out of me when I saw multiple cars pulled up on the verge and a cloth with red stains covering something very small. Found out later it was a 7 year old girl, and her mother had seen it happen. Just remembering is painful.

I looked up the original story, which said she was "crossing the highway while walking to Linden United Methodist Church."

On Google Earth, it appears the church is in town, on US Hwy 43, which runs through the center of town. It's a nice two-lane stretch of road.

Right. But people become old and infirm in body and mind and often don’t judge well as their abilities decline. It is just the way the human animal works.

Are you kidding? CA for example will give drivers licenses to those barely breathing, those being treated for dementia, and those wearing bathrobes straight out of the dusty alleys of Ustinkistan..They throw these people onto 12 lane freeways and wonder why it turn to carnage constantly.

Look, if your that old and frail, eye sight failing, etc, do not play on the highways or use such things as power equipment, or take the blower up on the roof to clear leaves.

This is not complex.

How do you know this? I ask because both my wife and I have had to renew our CA Driver’s Licenses in the past few months and I seriously doubt those with the maladies you mention would be able to pass the test. And it’s a new system that requires you use a computer to take the test. BTW, my wife and I are both in our mid 70’s and the state law REQUIRES anyone renewing their license after age 70 to have to come in and take the test. Ustinkistan? maybe that’s where you live but it nowhere near where we live.
