Majority of Russians against revival of monarchy (Roughly 1 in 3 support restoration)

Two-thirds of Russians oppose the revival of Russian monarchy, believing that its historical time has passed, according to recent research from the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion. At the same time, 28% of Russians are not against reviving monarchy in their country, but say they don’t see a worthy candidate at this time, reports Interfax-Religion.

The overwhelming majority of respondents (82%) believe the current republican form of government is more suitable. Smaller towns and villages approved of the current form slightly more, at 84-86%. In specifically choosing between monarchy and a republic, only 11% inclined towards monarchy.

Were the monarchy to be restored, respondents favored looking to public figures and politicians to fill the role (13%), rather than to a Romanov descendant (6%). 70% say that the revival of the monarchy in Russia at this time would be impossible and incorrect.

According to the poll, among those who oppose the autocracy, most are supporters of the Communist party (74%) and elderly Russians (70%). Electorates of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia are more in favor of the monarchy (36%), and younger, 45-59 year-olds (31%).

The poll was conducted March 9-10, with 1,600 people in 138 locations in 46 regions and republics responding. The margin of error is 3.4%.

Discussion about the possibility of reviving the Russian monarchy has started up again after a March TV broadcast in which the head of Crimea Sergei Aksenov said, “We do not need democracy in this form, as it is presented in the Western media… We have our traditional Orthodox values… In my view, today, Russian needs monarchy.”

Interesting. The real headline should be that on the 100th anniversary of the Revolution, roughly 1 in 3 Russians want the monarchy back.

Is there a royal family member still alive not murdered by putin’s co-workers in the KGB?

Would not mind a ceremonial head of state but bringing back the Tsarist autocracy is crazy and delusional. Maybe at best it was a 50/50 proposition the Tsar would be effective. For every Peter the Great or Alexander II was a Paul.

I wish they would bring back the monarchy; I do believe the Romanovs do have cousins alive, so-called “pretenders” to the throne today.

The Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna is widely recognized as the legitimate heir to the throne, including very importantly by the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church which is staunchly monarchist.

I think putin is a lot like Justin Beaver, or just KGB queer bait.

The irony is she married a Hohenzollern.

Her son would be the next Czar and a descendant of Kaiser Wilhelm.

This is because under the law of succession proclaimed by Czar Paul (who hated his mother Catherine II) in order to retain a place in the line of succession you could only marry members of other royal families. He also banned women from succession unless there were no male Romanovs who could succeed. Maria is heir in part because all of the surviving male members of the family are “tainted” by morganatic marriages.

Its overall very positive that Russians are openly examining general topics of tradition, culture, history and Orthodox Christianity - looking to define all those things that make Russia unique and “good.”

We in the West are going the opposite direction - seeking to destroy all from the past that made us good or even great.

The Romanov family brought peace to a country that had been suffering through turbulence before their reign started; the Romanovs lifted Russia out of rural obscurity, built architecturally modern cities, established universities, gave the country a navy, beat back Napoleon Bonaparte, and eventually abolished serfdom (probably should have done that sooner, but still).
I say bring back the Romanovs!

Russia never stopped having a tsar except 1992-2000, it’s just that the title changed.

Sure, if they come back as figureheads, like the Scandinavian or Spanish monarchs.

If they're hoping for anything more than that it wouldn't be a good idea.

The Romanov family brought peace to a country that had been suffering through turbulence before their reign started.

Don't forget some really stupid and disastrous wars they got Russia into, though.

All monarchs should be overthrown. If they resist, they should expect their fate. Monarchs are the least legitimate of all governments.

Don’t forget that the Romanovs also dragged Russia into the disaster known as WW I. If only Russia had not mobilized against Austria-Hungary in July of 1914...there would have been no Lenin, no Stalin, no Hitler.

Now, having said that I think Russia would be better off today if it had a constitutional monarch.

Russia could have prevented the Revolution, after all there was the one in 1905 which was more or less the dress rehearsal.

Sadly, Nicholas didn’t work with the Kadets and Octobrists to transition society.
