In Europe spat, Turkish president warns Westerners on safety

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ramped up his anti-European rhetoric on Wednesday, warning that the safety of Western citizens could be in peril if European nations persist in what he described as arrogant conduct.

Erdogan's remarks came amid tension over Dutch and German restrictions on Turkish officials who tried to campaign for diaspora votes ahead of an April 16 referendum on expanding the powers of the Turkish presidency.

"Turkey is not a country that can be pushed and shoved, whose honor can be toyed with, whose ministers can be ousted, whose citizens can be dragged on the ground," Erdogan told Turkish media representatives in Ankara, the Turkish capital.

"These developments are being watched in all corners of the world," he said. "If you continue this way, tomorrow no European, no Westerner anywhere in the world will be able to step onto the streets safely, with peace of mind."

Erdogan did not elaborate. While it is questionable whether the spat between Turkey and Europe would ignite global indignation against the West, the president's remarks are followed closely by his supporters in a NATO member country with significant numbers of Western residents and visitors. This month, he said the European Union was provoking "a struggle between the cross and crescent," casting the tension as a dispute between the West and Islam.

Good thing they’re in NATO.

So if Turkey and a European country went to war, do we fight on both sides just to make sure all angles are covered?

I understand there was/is? a reason to have Turkey in NATO, regarding some important water crossing, but does that still apply in 2017?

What navy over there could we not sink in a day?

Sounds like a threat.

Turkey needs to be kicked out of NATO, ASAP.

The Turkish economy gets a lot of money from western tourists. Follow the Turkish prime minister’s warning. Do not go there and give your money to filthy Muslims.

I’d like to see some predictions as to when European countries will begin allowing their citizens to arm themselves again.

I’m betting 5 years, no matter how severe or frequent the terrorist attacks become.

Europeans have forgotten the lessons learned with blood at Constantinople, Malta, Lepanto. Grenada and Vienna. Islamic culture is and has never been compatible with Western values.

Somebody needs to remind the little dick-tater of the 03 July, 2003 'hood event' (Çuval Olayı) in Northern Iraq. Could happen again in Western nations if Turks get too pushy.

Making threats at your allies is rather rude. Perhaps it’s time for Turkey to be ousted from NATO since they want to act like this.

There is a high probability that US and other Western nation cruise lines will be re-routing all of their Mediterranean fleets that presently stop at Istanbul and Ephesus area ports. These ships are a huge economic plus to these areas. Lots of Turkish business owners and their staffs will be looking at empty businesses.

Then we have all of the European vacationers who will no longer be vacationing in Turkey.

I think it is time for Turkey to be offered a choice, stay in NATO and the 21st century or go head back to the 7th century. They are still the sick man of Europe and will destroy Europe if the liberals of the continent are allowed to continue their unending suicidal behavior.

Turkey needs to be shown the door, ASAP.

Or what? They’ll commit genocide again, like with the Armenians?

This, we would have seen from the last Administration. They were just that inept

THUS we now have this Administration which remains to be judged. The light does shine brighter in this as opposed to the past.

The war with Islam, particularly the Turks, never ended.

it just went quiet for a while.
