CHICAGO (CBS) For many, a loved ones funeral or wake is a somber time; but in some Chicago neighborhoods, the mourning happens under the threat of gang violence.
CBS 2s Jim Williams reports that some community leaders are calling for state lawmakers to crack down on this.
While June Williams has offered comfort to the grieving at her funeral home for decades, it still didnt prepare for her some of the things she would witness.
A gentleman went up to see his brother, who had been killed, and Im standing at the casket, so of course, Im thinking, how touching hes grieving over his brother. And another walked up, put his arm around him and he stabbed him, Williams said.
Increasingly in Chicago, violence, often gang retaliations, plague even sacred moments such as these.
I have experienced going to funeral homes and churches where weapons are laid up under the seats, crisis responder Andrew Holmes said. (snip)
Ive been a licensed funeral director 33 years, Williams said. So Ive seen the changes in the industry, but this, I have to be scared for my own life now.

They care about as much for Chicago as I do, which is little or nothing......................
Too many Amish in town.
See, see you meanie old right-wing FReepers! They’re just learning on the job practicing to be morticians too!
And we would be called racist, if we ask what’s up with all the violence among the youth gangs in Chicago and other cities. We will be called racist if we ask how someone can perpetrate gang violence at a funeral or wake or memorial.
Whoever said there are certain things you aren’t allowed to say was right. This whole subject of inner city gang violence is one such subject.
I do not understand why these are not terrorist organizations and why DHS in not occupying every every block with heavily armed agents. They have 250,000- agents and civil servant — Ar15s , 1 billion rounds of .223 and 2500 armored personnel carriers. Let’s get our money’s worth in Chicago right now!! Also we have attack drones!!1
MSM won’t talk about the 100’s killed each year in Chicago. Wrong people involved.
The gangs could be provided with armed drones with range limited to the air space above their neighborhoods. Could make the natural selection process more efficient and rapid.
It’s not just Chicago. Last Sunday in Dallas some folks got together in remembrance of two gang members that were shot and killed one year ago. It didn’t remain peaceful, and two more people were shot.
Lol. Only in Chitcago.
I wonder how much the average gang bang funeral costs? Who pays for it?
Increasingly in Chicago, violence, often gang retaliations, plague even sacred moments such as these.
Time for some hard facts about Chicago violence and who the hell is paying for this crap. When this man was taken to the emergency room, WHO PAID THE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR HIS 'CARE'? AND HOW MANY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?
Did the hospital write off the loses on their taxes? Who paid the doctors? We can't change 'health care' until we have the numbers. Billions of dollars are being spent against the will of the people of these cities... who is picking up the tab? And how will 'health care' STOP IT FROM BEING INNOCENT TRADITIONAL AMERICANS...
“community leaders are calling for state lawmakers to crack down on this.”
So let me get this straight the state needs to crack down on gang violence at the funerals of gang members killed by gang violence. The idea that maybe they could attack the crime and gang violence that is the root cause of this seems beyond them. But I guess it’s in line with Mayor Emmanuel’s famous “if you’re going to shoot somebody, take it in the alley” approach to crime.
How expected...
Brawls at funeral home viewings are not unusual here in the Appalachian hills. Bad blood.
Amish lives matter?
