Three intelligence sources told The Daily Beast that the ban on carry-on electronics aboard U.S.-bound flights from 10 airports in North Africa and the Middle East was the result of information seized during a U.S. raid on Al Qaeda in Yemen in January. The United Kingdom joined the U.S. ban Tuesday.
Information from the raid shows al Qaeda's successful development of compact, battery bombs that fit inside laptops or other devices believed to be strong enough to bring down an aircraft, the sources said. The battery bombs would need to be manually triggered, a source explained, which is why the electronics ban is only for the aircraft cabin not checked luggage.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security publicly cited two attacks on flights in the last two years, the downing of a Russian jet over the Egyptian Sinai in October 2015 and an attempt that nearly succeeded in bringing down a jet that had taken off from Mogadishu, Somalia last year and made an emergency landing after an explosion ripped open its cabin. The insurgent group Al-Shababb claimed credit for getting a laptop onboard the flight that had been rigged as a bomb.

Fascinating. As a naval history buff, I’d like to visit some of those places sometime, but... Not so sure it would be worth the hassle.
It magically become an Obama operation.

We want to try one of these some day!
“As ISIS & AQ get more sophisticated, its not hard to visualize all battery powered electronics larger than a cell phone being banned from all commercial flights.”
I can imagine being able to link several mobile telephones together as well. It doesn’t take a whole lot to blow a hole in the window of an air liner.
Even clock-boy can do it.
SS1
Take a litbium ion battery and stab it with a screwdriver. Stand back and do it outside.
Or just look ok youtube. Get 10 Jihadis on a flight, stack the batteries on top of eachother and you have something resembling a thermite grenade.

Racism! Get the 9th Circus on the horn!
Curious. I traveled for work to Taiwan on the first days after the skies opened for travel after 911. On the return flight check-in process, all were asked to open their laptops, power them on and open their choice of software in the Programs section of the Windows Button.
I am really surprised it has taken them (DHS) this long to realize the potential and a warrior was killed for them to wake up.. Asleep at the switch and just lucky that the “nothing” that McCain railed against about the raid, didn’t get to the next point of taking another airliner down.
My first thought on this....raid was in January & we are JUST NOW banning these???
Hoverboards are likewise dangerous. Have you saw videos of those things blowing up? How the heck did they ever get approved for sale in the first place?
I’m wondering if they do not already scan for detonators. Don’t they have some small amount of chemical explosives? Can this be screened for?
In any case, laptops need batteries, so they are (up to this point) fairly ubiquitous and innocuous. It’s real easy to remove and even aggregate several laptop batteries but not tablet batteries. They’re very difficult to remove. I don’t see how tablets are an issue.
I take some long flights several times a year. I have a whole bunch of movies I can watch on my tablet, which helps make the otherwise overcrowded and uncomfortable flight survivable. And sometimes I fly to give a presentation at various conferences and I’ll work on my slides/presentation on the laptop when flying in.
Losing all of that would definitely suck.
Pray America woke
YOU have no proof Senator McCain met with Muslim terrorists that were armed and supported financially by America's FIRST Muslim President.
You also have NO proof that John McCain was not a war hero. He never aided the enemy as other Vietnam war prisoners have alleged. The nickname of "songbird" has no basis in reality. This tape of McCain's alleged treason is obviously a fake, probably made by the Russians to embarrass him.
TOKYO ROSE McCain sings like the songbird he was named by other Vietnam prisoners
President Trump was wrong to have alleged this knucklehead's claim to fame is that he got shotdown, an apology is needed immediately. /sarc
China lies. That is how those things got approved for import.
