With more than $300,000 and volunteer homeowners, Multnomah County has a new idea to fight homelessness: Build tiny houses in people's backyards and rent them out to families with children now living on the street.
The homeowners would pay nothing for the construction. They would become landlords and maintain the units for homeless families for five years.
Then the tiny houses would become theirs to do with what they want. If the homeowners break the contract before then, they pay the cost of construction.
The project would put the 8-month-old joint homeless office - a shared effort between the county and Portland -- in the housing business while offering an innovative, if so far small-scale, way to chip away at Portland's affordable housing shortage.
Four tiny houses are tentatively scheduled to launch this June at $75,000 apiece, with the hope for up to 300 accessory dwelling units as they're known in the next year if the first ones work out.

Portlandia skit material.
Oh for gawd sakes
Whoever comes up with these knucklehead “ideas” should be FIRED
What could possibly go wrong?
How much rent can you charge to a family now living in the street?
"They would become landlords and maintain the units for homeless families for five years."
Wait until unsuspecting landlords find out what it costs to fix appliances that are trashed and walls with holes kicked in them. BTW- who pays the utilities and garbage pick up?
And what happens to their neighbor’s property value?
What could go wrong?
About 273 things, all foreseeable.
This is really a great insight into liberal thinking. It’s like an idea a 5th grader would come up with. Our only hope as a society is if the same person who came up with the idea in 5th grade would change their mind and think it was a stupid idea by the ninth grade. Sadly....

Yep,and knock The Yankees season is almost here.:-)
That said, can you IMAGINE having that little house full of the homeless in your backyard? The negatives are too numerous to mention.
All is well here-—and looking forward to spring.
Offer free bus tickets to Berkeley. Oh wait, Portland, same thing....
Another of the myriad examples of how stupid our political leadership is ! Stupid at all levels of government!
In the campaign Trump said something about this.
Some ideas are so stupid that only intellectuals believe them. George Orwell
Re-criminalize marijuana. The homeless will leave the state. Problem solved.

FOR $75,000 does anyone think someones life could be made productive?
Oh yeah, that’ll work out just swell. Homeowners won’t have to drive to the garbage dump anymore, it’ll be right there in their backyard.
That was pretty close.
A $700 Rubber Maid shed would work just nicely, hose it out if and when they leave.
Hey! How about stacking the Tiny Houses side by side, then on top of each other. Portland’s very own Tiny Housing Project for the housing challenged!
So. Homeowners are stuck living with whatever criminal types are assigned to them...with no chance of eviction, and a $75,000 fine if they pull out.
I can just see the volunteers lining up.
