What Trump’s Budget Could Mean for the Affected Agencies
NYT ^ | 3/16/2017 | ALAN RAPPEPORT

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s first federal budget proposal calls for spending billions of dollars on the military and border security while imposing deep cuts to government departments that deal with the environment, diplomacy, the arts, science and cities.

White House budgets are largely political documents that set out presidential priorities, and most of the cuts that Mr. Trump is asking for are unlikely to happen.

But some of them could.

As Congress weighs Mr. Trump’s requests, industry leaders who are facing a loss of federal funding are starting to sound the alarm about the dire situations they could be facing.

I have now been a County Supervisor for over four years. I am knee deep, everyday in this stuff. I hate it. I hate that we have become addicted to this federal money that people think falls from the sky. I am tired of watching how this money is distributed and the string that are attached to it. But here we are with a huge infrastructure that relies on this money. It has to happen.. but it has to happen slowly and with some notice or else it’s going to create a much larger problem. I say that with sorrow as I can’t believe how we’ve gotten here.

The Times breaks it down by category and provides an "analysis" if each category. The "Science" analysis is summed up thusly:

“Do they not think that there are advances to be made, improvements to be made, in the human condition?” said Rush D. Holt, a physicist and chief executive of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The other categories take a similar view of Trump's proposals: Trump is dragging us back to the Dark Ages without the benevolent tonic of more government spending.

IOW, he’s steering the FedGov back to why it exists in the first place.

NYT at the bottom of the article: Truth. It’s hard to find.
My comment, And you likely won’t find it here.

That’s usually a pretty thankless job, so thanks for doing your part. I haven’t - but have seen enough close up to know what you’re saying. It’s why the expression “all politics is local” came into being - it’s harder to terminate a program or employee when they’re your neighbor and you see the consequences. So having “free money” that allows elected officials to offer programs and have employees they might not otherwise be able to justify probably felt really good when it started. But now? You’re damned if you do keep accepting it and damned if you have to deal with the loss of it. So despite all the hue and cry on places like FR to “just cut it!” a gradual weaning is probably the only viable solution.

And I live in IL where even well-intentioned state legislators just shake their heads because no one has any idea how to stop this runaway train.

Disagree completely. It sounds too much like “This isn’t the hill to die on ... “ urged by timid GOP-e for the last eight years.
We should proceed cautiously? It has taken decades to construct this monster.

We’ve got four years to make a good start on disassembling what you describe as a “huge infrastructure that relies on this money”: Leviathan. This is probably our last chance. Take big bites. Kill it now.

Go Trump! He didn’t have to volunteer for this duty. Trump has said that if we support him he will work for us. Dismantling the status quo is why we elected him. If he doesn’t try to do what he said he would do, he’s a one-term president and we’re screwed.

This IS the hill to die on.

Firstly (and bigly) heads will roll. Second, we will begin to reign in spending that is WASTEFUL. Does anyone dare to believe that Ronald Reagan eliminated this incipient and chronic aspect of how DC and it’s inhabitants treat money? Remember $700 screwdrivers? And whatever happened to the GAO? It’s a new day and praise God for it!

I work over on the federal side, in an agency Trump wants to expand.

One of the things people really underestimate is the efficiency costs of bureaucracy. A massive bureaucracy allows the creation of entities with single ancillary purposes. These groups have nothing better to do than to create diversions from the primary mission. Since that is their only job they have plenty of time to enforce compliance. Compliance becomes window dressing.

All Federal Government needs to shrink by 30-40% if we want to save Social
Security & Medicare.

I’m not disagreeing in principle but before those heads roll, someone has to do the dirty work of cutting them off, telling someone they no longer have a job, won’t be getting that check, of that office won’t be open any more. And nobody in government ever wants to do that.

If you want to talk about the size of government, compare the number of non-military federal employees under Reagan to the number under Obama:

https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/data-analysis-documentation/federal-employment-reports/historical-tables/total-government-employment-since-1962/

THe beast resists attempts to change it, no matter who has tried.

So not one penny to be cut from the middle class entitlements. Only the poor have to give up benefits.

Exactly! Govt. duties are stated in the Constitution and Pres, Trump is abiding by the Constitution. Down with Communists, otherwise called progressives. Back to self determination and individual responsibility. Foremost at stake is our sovereignty as a nation.

JOBS JoBS JOBS!!! When people can get jobs again as they used to be able to do, they won’t be begging at the nation’s treasury. under president Trump The jobs are coming back( something Obama said was impossible) and people will soon be employed where they want to work. So a few will have to tough it out for a while. So what!!! Most of us who are not part of the Marxist cult have dealt with it before. Utopia doesn’t exist.

What “Middle Class?” The middle class of this country has been decimated under the Democrats!!!!!

Too bad if nobody wants to tell someone they’ve lost their “job.” Those should be the first eliminated. Time to face reality. War is war and we’re fighting to save the country!!!
