China finally got around to responding to Japans planned tour of the South China Sea with the helicopter carrier Izumo, its largest warship. The Chinese response was predictably unpleasant, as reported by Reuters.
If Japan persists in taking wrong actions, and even considers military interventions that threaten Chinas sovereignty and security then China will inevitably take firm responsive measures, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing.
China said on Tuesday that it was waiting for an official word on why Japan plans to send the warship on the tour through the South China Sea, but that it hoped Japan would be responsible.
Hua did not say on Thursday if China had received confirmation of the plan, but said that the South China Sea issue did not involved Japan and that the country should reflect deeply on its disgraceful past invasion of the Paracel and Spratly Islands.
China routinely insists non-claimants should not interfere with the South China Sea territorial dispute. In addition to China, this dispute prominently involves Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Brunei, but not the United States or Japan.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australian Foreign Minister has backed the right of all nations and their vessels to traverse international waters according to international law, including Japans right to sail its largest warship through the region.

Has China forgotten what Japan did in Nanking?
Is the South China Sea not international waters?
But China is perfectly fine with the Nork’s launching missiles towards Japan...
That’s the problem. China has NOT forgotten what happened in Nanking.
There should be a half dozen fast attack subs and a few Tin Cans escorting the LPH.
water is kind of shallow for subs there.
yes, but their subs are small in comparison to our nuke subs. The chinese have also been charting the bottom for a few years for a reason.
I wonder if they use those helo’s for dipping in for hostile subs? where is the elevator?
> China has NOT forgotten what happened in Nanking. <
Yep. After WW II, Germany decided to take the path of complete honesty. Germany acknowledged the many crimes of the Nazis, and apologized for them. Japan took a different approach. That just might come back to haunt them.
A cat shot in a helo must be pretty exciting!
Not as much as the trap. Catch the 3 wire!
No they haven’t, and that’s part of the problem. The Japs in Nanking did nothing strong, they brutalized helpless civilians, that’s about it.
China found secret oil in international waters. They want the oil for themselves.
If Trump and the Japanese want to get China to do something about the dog eating nut job all they have to do is hint that the Japanese will probably have to develop nukes in response to the Norks and their nukes and missile tests. Also hint they may have to consider the South Koreans doing the same thing. See how long nut ball keeps breathing.
Japan already has nuclear weapons technology and has for a long time. If they decided it was necessary to thwart North Korea - or China - they could deploy sophisticated fusion warheads very quickly.
They just need to let the chicoms know that option is clearly on the table if they don’t reign in their crazy aunt in the basement fairly quickly.
