Few charter school grads earn degrees

HEADLINE: Few charter school grads earn degrees (On my USA Today newspaper)

FACTS> (from article): Statistics for charter schools as a whole are hard to come by, but the best estimate puts charters’ college persistence rates at around 23%. To be fair, the rate overall for low-income students – the kind of students typically served by charters – is even worse: just 9%.

This morning, as I walked out of my hotel, I saw this HEADLINE on the USA Today: "FEW CHARTER SCHOOL GRADS EARN DEGREES".

That headline bothered me, all day... What could it mean? Are Charter Schools bad? Are they corrupt? What the hell?

Just now, I read the story... It's basically an article about charter schools in Los Angeles... How, they "boast eye-popping statistics: 95% of low income students graduate from High School and go to college". But then, only 25% of these students end up earning a college degree. Dang... that sounds pretty bad.

Then, 6 paragraphs in, you get to the "truth". Yes, only 25% of charter school graduates earn a college degree. But, in regular PUBLIC High Schools, having the same kind of students (low-income, high minority)... The rate is even worse! Only 9%!!! Charter schools do 177% BETTER... but, this article's headline is designed to TRASH Charter schools..... a system Championed by Trump's new education Secretary. The article goes on to say, the Charter school (private) administrators admit they think they need to do better. This, is their goal for the next 10 years. But, they're already beating the crap out of public (government run) schools.

Who among us doesn't want WHATEVER the best system is, for our kids?? I'll take ANY system that promises improvement. Not USA Today. They actively work to bury the facts, just to push an agenda that is beholden to teacher's unions, not to kids.

This is the kind of crap that just makes me sick.

Thanks. My wife heard a bit of a radio newscast about this and knew if had to be some sort of media deception.

Typical.

I call BS.

My kids, both charter school grads, completed university. The first kid got a BS in Mathematics in three years from UT Austin. The second kid got a BA in History in two years from UT Dallas.

Maybe charter schools in LA are really bad. But I’d wager that they’ve juked the numbers to make them look worse than they really are.

Precisely. This is MSM bias on display based on the prodding by the NEA, I’m sure. An analogy for this would be an article about the economies of the US and Venezuela, critical of the US economy while barely mentioning what the hell is going on in Venezuela.

So they create about 250% more grads than the norm (public schools).

What else it probably didn’t even get into was the high school graduation rate. I suspect the charter school rate in near 90% and the public schools in Los Angeles is under 50%, but I’m just guessing

And this is supposed to be some sort of indictment of charter schools?

Logic is not a skill fake-news MSM "journalists" are expected to possess.

They did show the charter school rate... ~ 95%.

Didn’t show public school rate.. I bet, MUCH LESS than 50%.

Even a HS degree is important.

Link to the article.

To be fair, the article does have a graph that illustrates the dismal performance of government-run schools relative to charter schools.

The main defect in the thesis of the article is that it presumes that everybody should go to a four-year college or university after completion of secondary education. This is not, never has been, and never will be true.

My headline:

Charter school Grads earn degrees at **more** than 2 1/2 times the rate of government schooled kids.

By the way, given the drop out rate of government schooled kids, the actual percentage rate of charter schooled kids earning degrees is likely far far far greater than than the typical government schooled child.

You are being far too kind.

These writers and editors know **EXACTLY** what they are doing.

They are deliberately producing FAKE news.

yes... I agree. And, it’s despicable.

I am a BIG believer in good public schools. I believe Education is “the great equalizer”. It gives EVERYONE a CHANCE to improve their lot in life.

Granted, many will still not be able to grasp this ring. But, it’s OUR responsibility to PUT THE RING THERE. Give kids a chance.. a real chance.

Whatever system provides the BEST opportunity, I’m for it.

Maybe the charter school students learned enough that they did not need the burden of student loans to earn a good living.

When the trashing of Charter Schools comes up, look for the union label in close proximity.

The teacher’s unions loathe the Charter Schools.

Charter Schools actually teach the kids something.

A 95% graduation rate pretty much speaks for itself too.

At least the kids got a high school education. That’s something many of the kids who attend high school to graduation don’t get.
