WASHINGTON (AP) -- Before the first snow fell, U.S. meteorologists realized there was a good chance the late-winter storm wasn't going to produce giant snow totals in big Northeast cities as predicted.
But they didn't change their forecasts because they said they didn't want to confuse the public.
National Weather Service meteorologists in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington held a conference call Monday afternoon about computer models that dramatically cut predicted snow amounts. They decided to keep the super snowy warnings.
"Out of extreme caution we decided to stick with higher amounts," Greg Carbin, chief of forecast operations at the Weather Prediction Center in suburban Maryland, told The Associated Press. "I actually think in the overall scheme that the actions (by states and cities) taken in advance of the event were exceptional."
On Monday, the weather service predicted 18 to 24 inches of snow in New York City. By late Tuesday afternoon, Central Park was covered with a little more than 7 inches of snow with rain and sleet still falling. Other areas, including upstate New York and Connecticut, received more than a foot and a half of snow. Swaths of Pennsylvania were walloped by 20 to 30 inches of snow

Wimps.
Now we have fake weather
Wonder how much $$$$ was lost the past couple of days?
Now we have fake weather
Out of extreme caution, you wasted millions of dollars and scared a lot of people. Great job, bureaucrat!
I used that excuse on tests in college all the time. I told the prof I really knew the right answer, I just left the wrong answer on my paper because I didn’t want to confuse them by changing it at the last minute.
Read: We’re wrong again.
Thousands of businesses shuttered. Airports closed. Schools closed. . . Isn’t this a great country?
Nobody was talking about rain until this morning. If it was all snow that would have been different.
...around 18-20 here northwest jersey...very high wind gusts....
Climate “scientists” decide not to tell the truth about human-caused global warming “out of an abundance of caution.”
They just damaged any trust viewers had in them. Now you can’t believe any big weather claims. Jerks.
Can’t forecast sunshine next week but can predict we will perish of global warming in 80 years.
Well, news at 11:00 .... there’s a world outside of New York City and Boston, and THAT world got a boatload of snow dumped on it. I’m looking at > 2 ft right now, with drifts several feet higher than that in the road outside and it’s STILL snowing.
Trump needs to clean house.
This is perfect snowmobiling weather. Work is done. Signing off. Hitting the roads before they get plowed/ruined.
You have no idea how difficult and uncertain it is to nail a forecast track for a coastal storm along the I-95 corridor. I live in the Northern Philly suburbs and this storm still caused havoc - it is harder to plow than pure snow. A sleet storm like this caused a massive jam-up on I-78 back in 2007.
CBO Predicts HUGE Snowfall.....
Even if the snowfall totals for the major cities were off, this storm was miserable. The areas west of NYC got a lot of snow dumped on them, and the combination of early snow and then sleet made it treacherous outside. The packed snowbanks left behind by snowplows made travel on most roads impossible.
In other words, they can’t even get their predictions correct in the middle of the event itself - yet they can tell us that in fifty years the ocean is going to rise 3.197 inches and the temperature increase by 4.645 degrees due to Climate Change.....
