It’s also pretty clear that the local infantry that is doing the fighting against ISIS isn’t worth a tinker’s damn. They can’t make a move without gobs of airpower and now, apparently, a Marine Arty Battalion laying down cover. Even then they seem to move at a snails pace.
And they’re losing lots of lives in the fight to destroy ISIS. I understand 500 to clear the last village. I guess they’re just not great infantry and deserve to be chastised.

Has Congress declared war ?
Do we just go into any country we want to now ?
Approval of Congress is not necessary to deploy Marines. That’s why we have Expeditionary Units.

Stephen Townsend, who commands the American-led task force that is fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria, had the authority to pull these Marines from Kuwait and send them in to Syria for a short deployment. The Marines are not fighting Syria.
But on what authorizes then into Syria ? The country of Syria is not one of our alies. In fact we would like to oust Assad
It used to be the Left that always claimed “It’s another Vietnam” to encourage defeatism for any US military action. The difference between our fighting North Vietnam and the Viet Cong and our fighting fighting ISIS is too absurd to take seriously. If we must consider this, then think of this. When did we have artillery and an allied army bearing down on Hanoi during that war, within 30 miles? Who is ISIS’s Soviet Union and Red China? Where is ISIS’s Cambodia and Laos? When did we ever have the bulk of the North Vietnamese Army boxed in to be bombed, shelled, and killed by infantry? The analogy doesn’t work. The inspiration for it seems beyond pessimism. And we have no choice if we’re to stop Islamists terrorism.

I'd guess at the first Arabic shouts of "Incoming" probably gave them a hint.
The enemy was destroyed by the Marine artillery and those surviving are aware of the Marine presence
I don’t think we declare war any more. We just eff around with it.
They need to exterminate ISIS. Chasing them out of any area is like chasing a cockroach back into a wall.

I find it hilarious our local Putinistas and armchair isolationists have adopted the language and tactics of the America hating left. They seem to dense to realize how silly they look.
But beware of mission creep.
The American people have no clue who is where anymore. They and Congress have checked out simply due to information overload.
Plus we are importing Muslims here now so what is the goal or end game ?
How can we aim for a target we don't even know exists?
Not meaning to be picking, but as a former artilleryman, we no longer have “heavy” artillery, since the 8” howiter was retired.
We have “light” (105 mm)’ and “medium” (155 mm).
The Marines have medium artillery.
But if you drop a 155 jo on your foot (97 lbs), it will damned-sure feel “heavy”!
