I don’t think Comey is wrong here, if this report is accurate. If the FBI is going to be tasked with investigating this matter, then it is in everyone’s interest to do it without having to deal with an allegation by the sitting President that might be construed as an attempt to prejudice the investigation
“an allegation of a sitting president that might be construed as an attempt to prejudice a case”? Gee, like no one we know didn’t do exactly that and how did that turn out?
