Flashback: Wyden Statement on Director Clapper’s Resignation ("Misled" and "Lied" to America)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., issued the following statement on the announcement of Director of National Intelligence James Clapper’s resignation:

“During Director Clapper’s tenure, senior intelligence officials engaged in a deception spree regarding mass surveillance. Top officials, officials who reported to Director Clapper, repeatedly misled the American people and even lied to them.

In 2012 you saw the Director of the NSA make statements like ‘we don’t hold data on US citizens’ and ‘the story that we have dossiers on millions or hundreds of millions of people is absolutely false.’ These statements deceived the American public in order to conceal mass surveillance, and when Senator Mark Udall and I tried to get the NSA Director to correct the record, he declined to do so.

After the NSA Director declined to correct these statements, I put the question to the Director of National Intelligence in March 2013. I wouldn’t have been doing my job if I hadn’t asked that question. My staff and I spent weeks preparing it, and I had my staff send him the question in advance so that he would be prepared to answer it.

Director Clapper famously gave an untrue answer to that question. So I had my intelligence staffer call his office afterward and ask them to correct the record. The Director’s office refused to correct the record. Regardless of what was going through the director’s head when he testified, failing to correct the record was a deliberate decision to lie to the American people about what their government was doing. And within a few months, of course, the truth came out.

Is there a statute of limitations on perjury before Congress? I would love to see this man in jail.

Lying to Congress is a crime. It’s not enough for Congress to wring its hands and condemn criminal acts. When are we going to start putting these lying criminals, like Clapper, in jail?

“Clapper is a proven liar. This is the guy that told Congress the NSA was not collecting information of any sort on millions of Americans (later determined that they were).”

There is another not well known reality, where Clapper could have had Canada, or the UK, Australia or New Zealand spy on Trump and any American or Americans without ordering it to be done by the NSA or FBI. Leaving Obama able to say, “I didn’t order the spying on Trump Tower, or as Nixon said decades ago, “I am not a crook!”

Due a google search on:
1. Project 5 eyes
2. Project Echelon
3. Project Prism

#1 and #2 go back to the early days after President Truman got rid of the OSS and established the CIA and the NSA.

Neither one were supposed to spy on American citizens as per their charter.

However, with 5 eyes, we would/could spy on the UK/Brits, Australians, Kiwis and Canadians and let the mother countries know when they might have problems. Then, they would monitor American citizens for us and give us the data on American Citizens. Supposedly the countries mentioned above can’t spy on their own people. Our NSA/CIA/? Could do that and report to the mother country if there was a problem.

Eschelon came about a little later, and with the 5 eyes lateral spying agreement, Echelon became solidified and very functional for decades.

Prism supposedly replaced 5 eyes and Echelon, but the 5 Eyes/Echelon concept was/is still there.

So Obama would not had to ask NSA/FBI to spy on Trump. He could have Clapper ask his counterpart in Canada to monitor Trump Towers and listen in to what was said.

The FBI may have put bugs in or set up electronic interceptions at Trump Towers for their Canadian intel counterparts to monitor all verbal and digital transmission to and from Trump Tower in October of last year until this year up to Trump becoming President.

GW in one of his current mumblings, may have directed us to Canada and the process noted above! So did Canada monitor Trump and his people in Trump Towers, in NYC and then report back to Obama, NSA, FBI and ?, so Obama could deny that he ordered the spying?

The Federal statue of limitations for perjury is 5 years. So charges will have to be filed against Clapper by March 2018.

I agree with you 100% that the deliberate lie to Congress needs to be prosecuted. Clapper needs to serve prison time for that.

Something tells me Sen. Wyden has, for some reason, recently lost all his curiosity over matters of illegal and/or unwarranted surveillance.
