Commerce Sec. Wilbur Ross Hints At Brilliant NAFTA Negotiation Strategy – “Make Mexico Great Again"

Oh, this guy is too good at this stuff. Lots of love for Wilbur the Wolverine.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross hints at a strategy for NAFTA renegotiation with Mexico that completely annihilates any leftist opposition, and simultaneously drops the greatest humanitarian narrative right in the lap of the globalists. Make Mexico raise their minimum wage.

wilbur-ross-3

Currently the minimum wage in Mexico is 80 pesos per day. Around $4 per day, and the length of the workday is up to the hiring company. The minimum wage in the U.S. for an eight hour day is $58 ($7.90/hr x 8). Additionally, almost no-one in the U.S. makes minimum wage, and almost everyone in Mexico makes minimum wage.

Here comes Wilbur the magnanimous and says: Lets Make Mexico Great, by adding in a requirement that Mexico raises their minimum wage to say, oh, $800 pesos per day ($40) as part of our NAFTA renegotiation.

Liberal heads explode in the U.S. and Mexican minister heads explode in Mexico. Wha… huh.. wait… Oh snap. How can they argue against him?

Jorge’ Ramos eyes spontaneously expand as big as saucers.

Oh, this is too funny. How can La Raza (Bernie and Perez’s clan) argue the Mean Trump meme, when President Trump is trying to stop the Mexican government’s exploitation of their own workers, and leverage fair wages into trade deals.

Secretary Wilbur Ross – El Hefe’ “Che T-Shirts” soon to be on sale in Mexico.

Oh, man. These trade guys are going to have too much fun. No wonder Ross was willing to step out of his billionaire lifestyle to join the administration.

Che’ Ross !! Love it. Oh, my sides are hurting and I’m adding laugh wrinkles.

BRILLIANT !!

Good Politics: YES

Milton Friedman Seal of Approval: NO

I could be wrong about that. But I doubt it.

In concept, you are correct, but Mexico’s news media will mostly denounce the US proposal as a nefarious effort by the United States to interfere with Mexico’s freedom and to drive up the costs of manufacturing in Mexico.

“Again”

Mexico has been an independent nation for nearly 200 years. During those two centuries, its contribution to technology, science, or any high culture of note has been effectively zilch.

To be fair though, Ross didn't say "again," just "Let's make Mexico great." I'd shoot for the more realistic and modest goal of "Let's make Mexico less of a dump."

“Free trade” does not exist in a single place in this world. It is a concept meant for guidance.

Take away the ability to obtain a free ride by coming to the United States illegally and the Mexican’s may be forced to make their own country a livable place.

++++
My “Milton Freidman Objection” wasn’t pointed at Free Trade - where your point is well taken. It was the idea that you could impose a huge increase in the Mexican Minimum Wage without incurring a massive economic disaster. Wouldn’t work. Couldn’t work. Won’t happen.

But clever politics nonetheless.

This a wonderful idea. Fair trade should consist of trading with nations with similar wages and environmental rules. When the rules don’t match we should tariff the difference. Nations can then choose either to improve wages and conditions in their nation or hand the US government a big fat check with every item. Most nations will choose to increase wages.

If you really think this one out,it makes sense on more than one level. If Mexico says “NO” then it’s no NAFTA. Not many ways the U.S. could lose. Obama had 8 years to come up with a proposal like this & he just made things worse.
