Ivanka Trump, who at the dawn of the Trump administration said she would be taking a low-profile role during her family’s transition from New York City to Washington, is being criticized for not being aggressive enough in asserting her Jewish identity.
Towards the end of a long column that takes the Trumps, including Ivanka, to task for being wealthy and successful, Anne Helen Peterson of BuzzFeed News focuses on Ivanka’s religion.
“In recent weeks, the White House’s acknowledgment (or lack thereof) of acts of rampant anti-Semitism has forced Ivanka’s hand, or at least forced her to break her silence,” Peterson wrote noting a recent White House statement and Ivanka Trump’s tweet on the issue.
“There was no invocation of her own identity as a Jew, and in fact, no invocation of Jewishness at all — save the hashtag, #JCC, whose meaning, for most, would remain opaque,” Peterson continued.
“Which isn’t to suggest that Ivanka is ashamed, per se, of being Jewish; rather, she understands that to remain as publicly palatable as possible, Jewishness cannot be central to her public identity.”
Many on Twitter stood with Ivanka Trump.
During the time when America was deciding its next president, Trump made no secret of the role of faith in her life.
In an October interview with The Atlantic, she said Thursday that faith and family keep her grounded on what really matters.
“Faith is what I always turn to,” Trump said, having converted to Judaism in 2009.
“Knowing that I have my family and I have my faith, friends and siblings, it does lend perspective to everything,” she said.
“I’ll have days when I read things that are so vicious, and I will look at my children and suddenly things are better,” she added.
In March 2015, Trump gave an interview with Vogue about her faith.
“I always shied away from it being a public conversation because it’s such a personal thing… We’re pretty observant, more than some, less than others. I just feel like it’s such an intimate thing for us… It’s been such a great life decision for me. I am very modern, but I’m also a very traditional person, and I think that’s an interesting juxtaposition in how I was raised as well. I really find that with Judaism, it creates an amazing blueprint for family connectivity,” she said.
She also noted that, as an Orthodox Jew, she and her family observe the Sabbath.
“We observe the Sabbath. From Friday to Saturday we don’t do anything but hang out with one another. We don’t make phone calls,” she said.
