President Donald Trump says he has "total" confidence in Attorney General Jeff Sessions as calls mount for the attorney general to resign or recuse himself over his contact with a Russian envoy.
Trump made the comment in Newport News Thursday. Asked if Sessions should recuse himself, he said "I don't think so."
Democrats are demanding that Sessions resign after the revelation that he had twice talked with Moscow's envoy to the U.S. during the campaign.
Sessions' conversations with the ambassador seem to contradict his sworn statements to Congress during his confirmation hearings.
Some Republicans are joining Democrats in calling on Sessions to step aside from a federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 White House election.

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee says he still doesn't have any evidence that people associated with Donald Trump's presidential campaign had improper contacts with Russian officials.
Rep. Devin Nunes (NOO'-nehs) made the comment to reporters after committee members heard from FBI Director James Comey (KOH'-mee).
Nunes says the only contact he's aware of involves Trump's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and the Russian ambassador to the United States.
The top Democrat on the committee, Adam Schiff, says the FBI director hasn't provided a full counterintelligence briefing to committee members.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions also met with the Russian ambassador during the campaign when Sessions was a senator and an adviser to the Trump campaign.
The Justice Department says there was nothing improper about the meetings.

Fight fire with fire. They should open investigations of Hillary Clinton’s dealings and how Obama was able to use hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to fund Left wing organizations the day before he left office. Offense is the best defense.
He needs to start using this phrase when dealing with certain individuals and groups from both parties:
“The usual suspects”.
He needs to be more direct.
Sessions is NOT resigning.
I am NOT asking him to resign.
He is NOT recusing himself from this or any other investigation.
Then he needs to ramp-up the firings of leaky intel and DOJ personnel.
Can someone maintain a list of exactly which Republicans are calling for Sessions to recuse himself? Because we know that even if its only two RINOs the media will make it sound like a whole bunch in their reporting.
And the American people have total confidence in President Trump.
Yep - turn him loose.
I do too. OTOH, McCaskill lied about meeting with the Rooskis and must resign, NOW!
He said the same about General Flynn. Just before.
The hysteria over Russians brings to mind a long ago film titled "The Russians Are Coming."
Jeff should just say I told that Russian that they were giving back that 20% of US Uranium Hillary sold them.
Some Republicans are joining Democrats in calling on Sessions to step aside...
Those are two of the “usual suspects” I was referring to.
Thank God. The WH has to stand firm on this.

Anybody else get a weird feeling about this? All of a sudden this story about Sessions and the Russians is taking all the oxygen out of the room. They are replaying tapes of what Sessions said to Al Franken in his confirmation hearings. The news media have decided to push this story as the crisis of the day. leading Democrats demand Sessions resign.
Where the heck did this story come from? Who decided this is the crisis of the day?
Please, President Trump, don’t bow down to this liberal tactic. Sessions is a great man and has served this country in Congress as a true leader and worked for our good.
Please, stand with Mr. Sessions. We need him there for all of us.
Remember when Obama was first elected and the Congressional Black Caucus popped down to Cuba to see Castro ,how may Laws did they break
I dunno, but I’m gonna take up ignoring politics starting today. This non-stop RAT assault is taking up WAY too much of my time and energy.
Graham has said it would be “crazy” for Sessions to resign. The weakest GOP link is Chafetz, who is going along with the Democrats. Blackmail?
One of my favorites, great comedy.
