A Frank Luntz focus group on President Trump's address to a joint session of Congress erupted when a first generation Latina immigrant said she came to America for an opportunity but people who come to the U.S. now "they have [a] kid and they start collecting money."

"The problem here is that, you know, anybody comes in they have kid and they start collecting money," she said. "That's every single person that I know, that's what they did." "I go to schools everyday," a black panel member said. "White people are on welfare." "I don't care about white people," the Latina woman said. "My point is we came here for an opportunity and not handouts."

This is a very telling exchange. One woman wants to work and doesn't justify laziness with "white people are lazy too." The other one justifies people having kids to get government checks by saying "white people are on Welfare."

People are talking past each other on immigration. Nobody is listening.

Trump says he want to kick the economy into high gear so all Americans can get good jobs. He wants to shrink welfare rolls. Black, White, whoever. Everybody who can, should work. And we should be generous with those who can’t. Also, saying some or even a lot of immigrants are bad doesn’t imply anything about all or the majority of immigrants. It is racist to think criticizing those immigrants who are bad disparages all immigrants.

Trump’s priorities on immigration: kick the violent out fast. Let’s see if we can come to an agreement with those who are here who are, independently of being here illegally, obeying the law. Otherwise, guess what? No deal means he will enforce the law. The clock is ticking, Democrats. Trump, all his life, has been a deal maker. And, let’s reform our immigration laws so they put our people first.

I keep saying it: there are some illegal aliens we might want to keep.
Overall, I don’t want them to stay, but if they are hard working, productive, and persistant, well, I think keeping them is a good idea.
Illegal alien criminals, on the other hand, need to be dealt with severely.

Are they conflating legal and illegal immigration again? The 'two movies, one screen' metaphor Scott Adams describes in pervasive.

Lefties hear "illegal immigrants" and their tiny, nasty, hate-filled minds only hear the word "immigrants." They hear only what they expect to hear . . . not what is actually being said.

The supposition that all “law abiding illegal immigrants”(this term would make even Orwell blush) can stay is bogus. Clean house now!

This is WHY there needs to be a LEGAL process for immigration.

To sort this lady who wants to work from hundreds who want to suckle the teat.

I suspect Trump will enforce the law as it is written but would prefer to strike a deal with Congress. From what he has said, his first priority is the violent and the gang members. They’re being rounded up right now. Perhaps while Immigration is rounding these people up, the outlines of a deal can emerge. Let’s see what happens. I have moved from supporting Cruz through the Indiana primary, to reluctantly supporting Trump in the general election as the nominee of my party, to embracing the vision and leadership he is bringing to Washington. I am beginning to think he will be a great President. Ronald Reagan, who was our last great President, only put a temporary bandaid on the problem of illegal immigration. I am starting to think Trump will fix this problem and many others as well.
