CNN's Van Jones is a frequent Trump critic if there ever was one. But after the president's speech to the nation on Tuesday night, Jones got emotional and was clearly impressed by Trump's handling of one particular part of the speech.
Jones said Trump's tribute to Navy SEAL Ryan Owens, who died in a raid in Yemen, was one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period and that it was the moment Trump became president of the United States. He also said it's the kind of thing that could make Trump a two-term president.
During Trump's remarks, cameras trained on Owens's widow, Carryn Owens, with tears streaming down her face. Facing her, Trump said her husband's legacy was etched into eternity.
Here's Jones's full commentary:
"There are a lot of people who have a lot of reason to be frustrated with him, to be fearful of him. But that was one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period. And he did something extraordinary. And for people who have been hoping that he would become unifying, hoping that he might find some way to become presidential, they should be happy with that moment....

Evil rat Commie Van Jones can go to hell. I am not interested in anything that commie rat bastard has to offer. Nothing.
Wow, you don’t expect that from Van Jones.
Trump did promise that black people were going to love him.
I also liked that Trump quoted the Bible with regard to Navy Seal Ryan.
Looks like Van may be angling for some kind of position in the Trump Administration. And Van, no, that was not the moment he BECAME President—he became President after he was elected and took office , finally on the 20th of last month. And he was elected because we who voted for him, always knew that about him-—we didn’t have to wait for the speech tonight.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
You cried when the widow wept tears over her husband.
Trump’s tribute came straight from the heart.
He’s been our President since he was elected but tonight he showed what it takes to be President.
I’m proud of him and I’m proud of our great country.
And I revere the people who gave up their lives to keep it free!
That is the first time in my life that I have been moved to tears by a speech by the president.
It was what he said, how he said it, and how she reacted.
Both of them are genuine.
That was something beautiful to see, and I know that Ryan Owens saw it too.
It was a great tribute, but it was also a direct jab at the father who went public with his dislike for Trump and the media who spread that Miami Herald interview around.
I feel the same.
That was the first state of the union-type speech I have ever enjoyed.
Yup.
This what Americans associate with their Commander In Chief: compassion and strength.
Both qualities were evident in President Trump’s response to Carryn Owens.
He spoke on behalf of a grateful nation for her husband’s ultimate sacrifice for our country.
“No greater love hath a man than he who lays down his life for his friends.”
Ryan Owens’ name is etched unto eternity, indeed.
Beware the Greeks bearing gifts.
No greater love hath a man than he who lays down his life for his friends.
That is so beautiful.
“That was the first state of the union-type speech I have ever enjoyed.”
Reagan’s first SOU address was really good. Trump may have come close to that last night.
I like that the White House streams the speech live and bypasses the media.
The Left politicized Ryan Owens’ sacrifice. Trump reversed the obscenity in a beautiful tribute to Ryan and his grieving wife.
Nope, not going to the WashPo.... Can you sneak out what he said here somehow?
>The Left politicized Ryan Owens sacrifice. Trump reversed the obscenity in a beautiful tribute to Ryan and his grieving wife.
It was amazing. Trump is a wonderful man.
Even Pelosi knew she’d BETTER stand and applaud.
The comment section at the article has a comment from one 'Rat saying he "hates Van Jones" --- now (Van Jones confessed Donald Trump is President of the United States).
bwaahahaah
Comrade Jones is trying to position himself on CCN (the Communist News Network) as a “moderate leftist” (was there such a thing as a “moderate Nazi”?).
The man is slicker that Bill Clinton’s “Slick Willie” and dresses better.
In stead of “Trust and Verify” is Jones is changing his “spots” or chameleon colors, just live by the old adage “Never Trust A Red”.
There are plenty of appropriate times to tell Van Jones to go to Hell; this isn’t one of them.
