I know some churches don’t have pictures of Jesus in them for that reason. They don’t bother me - but I can see the point that it probably gives a false image about God/Jesus.

We were just reading something in Revelation about how Holy God is. I found it interesting that God sitting on his throne was described in terms of light reflecting from precious stones. But all the creatures around Him had very detailed descriptions (the number of legs and wings, eyes, etc.) And in spite of what the study was about (how great God is), I got all caught up in the legs and wings and eyes!

We can be certain the Lord uses false religions and false teachers, or as in this case, an heretical book and it’s accompanying movie, to accomplish His sovereign will. Precious few will tolerate the truth. God simply gives many men what their fallen itching ears long to hear. That’s what judgment looks like. God doesn’t force them into error or cause them, or anyone else, to sin. All He need do is allow lost men to go their own way.

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
—2 Timothy 4:3-4

I had an 8 hour layover in LAX, so i thought I would read the “Shack” to pass the time.

About half way through, I tossed it in the waste can.

Watching “Arrivals and Departures” made more sense!

And...if “The book is always better than the movie”, I cant imagine how bad this movie must be!

[pictures of Jesus]

THE SHACK portrays GOD as a black WOMAN - reason enough to not read the story or watch the movie. (I never got past that part in the book.)

Thanks for the review. This excerpt describing the Trinity should warn a believer DO NOT READ.

“Mack approaches The Shack with rising anger, wanting to lash out at God for allowing his young girl to be killed. Instead of the old man with a long white beard, as Mack expects, he’s suddenly embraced by “a large beaming African-American woman” who introduces herself as Papa.

Mack is then introduced to the rest of the Trinity: Jesus, a Middle Eastern man dressed as a laborer, and the Holy Spirit, a woman of “maybe northern Chinese or Nepalese or even Mongolian ethnicity” named Sarayu. The rest of the story is a conversation among the three members of the Trinity and Mack as they work through issues of creation, fall and redemption.”

There’s enough poison in that book to delude anybody looking for worldly answers to their worldly problems.

Yeah - that sounded sort of silly when I first heard about it. If the rest of the theology was good, I could perhaps see the idea of portraying God as a black woman. And while other depictions of God in movies have some basis in the Bible (a man, a lion, etc.) they are obviously not entirely accurate either, as God is a Spirit. But they would be more accurate as God is described in those types of terms.

Hmm, God is often described metaphorically as protecting us with his wings. I wonder if any movies have Him as a bird? Maybe a kid’s cartoon or something.

(Hmm, I didn’t find that in a search, but Groucho Marx’s last film (Skidoo, 1968) had him portraying God as a lethargic pot-smoking dealer!)

Sometimes he’s an old cigar smoker too...

The TRINITY is GOD (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) - Three in One. To portray them as 3 separate human entities is in itself blasphemous.

I guess i put a lt of fatherhood into my interpretation of G-d...so the shack isn’t too far from what i think...

Again, I’m not sure I have a huge problem with the sex and race of the portrayals. But as your article goes on to say, these three characters talk about how they are all equal (scripture tells us they aren’t), that God also suffered on the cross (He didn’t, although I have in recent years have tried to imagine the suffering that God went through as He saw His Son on the cross). And then the part about how it doesn’t matter if you are Hindu or muslim or whatever, all paths lead to God.

I’m guessing as a book and a movie it will do better in sales in America than a book and a movie based around verses like putting God’s yoke on your shoulder, or about narrow paths and gates.

LifeTree (nation-wide program) which churches in our area support is featuring it in one of their sessions. So that’s what really got my attention when I heard John Haller really going into detail (on a FR post John Haller’s Prophecy Update 2/19/17). . so then I started checking out the web for more information.

“Friends and family kept giving me the book and I kept throwing it away.”

I did the same thing with a book by Rick Warren that turned into a fad about 15 or so years ago.

John 14:26, “These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

Granted - that whole Trinity thing is a mystery. It is true, but I don’t think that we can completely understand it as humans.

In the above verse Jesus is talking and the Holy Spirit (a “He”) is sent by the Father, in “My” name. So obviously the Trinity is three different entities. (And in a movie - that is where theatrical license comes in - otherwise we would only get to see Jesus.) Although those old movies like “The Ten Commandments” did a great job portraying God while also sticking to what is in the Bible (a voice, the burning bush, the columns of smoke and fire, etc.)

Modern Christianity has forgotten: GOD is HOLY and is to be reverenced.
