BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) - A Southern Illinois state representative is pushing a plan to end the state's program to register and identify gun owners.
Representative Jerry Costello said the Firearm Owners ID program is losing money and creating more bureaucracy for lawful gun owners.
"It's very important to my constituents in downstate Illinois," Costello said.
Currently the FOID cards are needed to purchase and possess guns and buy ammunition. Applicants must submit to a background check.

This might turn out to be an interesting thread. We have a significant portion of Freepers who think it’s illegal to own a gun in Chicago.
Goes to show Illinois is another example of the big difference between northern and southern halves, like California and Italy.
Yes, and when I point it out to them that Chicago's handgun ban went by the wayside some four years ago now, they get all uppity and rude and being corrected. LOL!
Get ready, this should be a fun thread!
Not really the northern and southern halves of Illinois, it’s basically Cook County (Chicago, surrounding suburbs) vs. the rest of the state!
Yes my Brother-in-Law is from Southern Illinois. He fits right in here in the Florida Panhandle. In fact he is probably even a little more conservative than average around here.
Not as bad as I thought!
I was looking at the map earlier today and struck by just how far south Illinois goes. Almost to Arkansas.
Good. It’s stupid and serves no purpose other than to separate us from $15.00 very 5 years. The next step should be to lower the insane cost of $150 for a CCL.
It’s as unconstitutional as a Poll Tax.

This is one messed up State, that’s for sure. Quinn won only 5 counties and managed to be elected Governor.
We should cut Cook, Lake, East St Louis, and Cairo loose from the rest of the State.

Many years ago, a team from Southern Illinois came to Troy during the early Spring. I think they stayed a week in the visiting team quarters. Probably played a game a day while they were there.
May have been Eastern Illinois State or something like that. I got to talking to them a few times and they were good kids, mostly rural. Pretty good ball players too. I was impressed with them.
I feel sorry for the good people in a state who get out-voted by the liberals.
But then how will they keep the bad guys from buying guns?? /s
Driving Illinois, north to south, or vice versa, was probably the most boring drive I ever made. I only went as far U of Ill in Champaign/Urbana, and that was enough to deter me from ever wanting to do it again.
Florida is a lot like that.
Just enough conservatives in Central Florida that the scale is barely tipped our way. Not enough to be comfortable tho. Also the old Cubans tend to be more conservative than other Hispanics.
Cairo, IL, at the southern tip of Illinois, is only about 35 miles from Tennessee.
It isn’t mentioned in the article, but Costello is a Democrat. His father was a former congressman. When Costello the younger first ran for the legislature, he made it a point that he was running against “Chicago politicians.” I haven’t followed his career to see how he has done. I do know his father was a reliable pro-life supporter.
Ending the ban on suppressors would be good, too.

Dammit! It was SEVEN years ago?! Time flies!!
