Homeland Security employees locked out of computer networks: sources

U.S. Department of Homeland Security employees in the Washington area were unable to access some agency computer networks on Tuesday, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

It was not immediately clear how widespread the issue was or how significantly it affected daily functions at DHS, a large government agency whose responsibilities include immigration services, border security and cyber defense.

Employees began experiencing problems logging into networks at 5 a.m. ET on Tuesday due to the expiration of the personal identify verification cards used by federal workers and contractors to access certain information systems, one source said. At least four DHS buildings were affected, the source said, including locations used by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Government agencies redoubled efforts to implement the use of "smart" cards for network log-ins following the 2015 discovery of a massive hack at the Office of Personnel Management that compromised nearly 22 million background check records.

President Donald Trump vowed to make cyber security a priority during his administration. At a White House event last month he said he would "hold my Cabinet secretaries and agency heads accountable, totally accountable, for the cyber security of their organizations."~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Don't know what to make of this...

Everyone in government gets warning e-mails before their CAC cards expire.

I heard once about a high-tech company outside Philadelphia where — it was said — you could always tell when a layoff was coming because everyone would be locked out of the computer system when they came into work.

You always want to err on “failing closed.”

The alternative is “failing open,” which lets everyone access what they shouldn’t

The system is functioning as it should and something with authorizations of employees is having problems.

I would like more government workers to have their access turned off.

I hardly think anyone outside of CNN or MSNBC would blame Trump for this. The man has had a month in office. Furthermore, this is not a security breach - it is due to an expiration of digitized identification cards used to log on to their computers. They should have passwords for their usernames that can be used if the PIV cards do not work so it is easily remedied and is not hand-wringing worthy (unless you are CNN or MSNBC).

Good example of the lack of communication found in bureaucracies.

Every little hick-up will now be mentioned to lend credibility to the idea government is falling apart under a Trump.

As a former DoD person, this does happen, when the order has been given to re-evaluate everybody’s security clearance, AND for the IT Dept. to examine as they can do, what kind of traffic went through which computer.

Yes, the blood will flow.

Maybe they’ve been downsized, only they don’t know it yet.

I worked with a man who got locked out of the system before anyone bothered to tell him he was fired. Wonder if this is just a hint.

This is not unusual. Most network administrators ask for a headsup when a person with access is fired. Change passwords, sequester email, remove access.
