An employer is required by most state and federal laws to verify legal employment status of the individuals they hire. It's very difficult to determine their true legal status when nearly all of them provide every legal document required at the state and federal levels. That is the reality. There is no extra level of scrutiny on whether the documents are legit unless other circumstances come up after the fact, such as a conflict with their provided SS number. Maybe there should be, but typically all minimum requirements are met and it goes no further at an employer level.

That they have access to realistic documents, clear SS numbers, and the kind of turn around time of hours instead of days for document requests is where the responsible parties are doing the most harm outside of the feds and states allowing these illegals over our borders in the first place.

That said, there are businesses that do knowingly hire these people, no doubt about it. Yes, those businesses should be held accountable if the evidence is clear.

Okay. That’s a different issue than forcing more regulations (unfunded mandate) on small businesses.

Hiring illegals is illegal.

Prosecute the criminal companies, don’t punish innocent businesses with more regulations.
