Declare the English language racist? Our beautiful language is beautiful because of the rules regarding structure, spelling and punctuation. For a long time teachers have been actively eroding our once proud language. Our daughter brought home a paper with misspellings and lacking any punctuation. She received an “A” and when we questioned the grade, in view of the mistakes, the teacher blew us off with “I don’t mark on spelling and punctuation, as long as the thoughts are there.” I’m sure there are worse examples in other courses of study but that was in 1973.

Common core has some horrible examples in simple arithmetic.

That is still going on now. I find it disturbing that my kids’ papers were graded harder in high school (private schools and home school co-ops) than in many of their college classes. I’m afraid their writing skills will deteriorate. Businesses are begging for people who can express themselves clearly and this is the attitude of mainstream educators? It’s criminal. Another thing that must be fixed to Make America Great Again.

I could see at very young grades not marking down their grade for spelling and punctuation errors, but they should be marked for learning to occur.

No. That is definitely not the reason. Many other languages have much stricter and cohesive rules. The reason English is beautiful is because of the many choices for sentence structure and the huge vocab. Of all the languages I’ve studied, we have the worst spelling and pronouncing “rules.” By far.

French is beautiful because of the descriptiveness, the art of it. German is extraordinarily useful with infinite ways to branch sentences. We combine the best of both.
