Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday that the US is going to push for a peace deal with the Palestinians and asked Israel "to hold back" on settlement construction.

"I'd like to see you hold back on settlements for a little bit," he said, a stronger opposition to the controversial building in the West Bank than he's previously articulated. Trump made the statements at a news conference welcoming the Israeli leader to the White House for their first face-to-face meeting since the inauguration.

I really hope that President Trump talked about that with Netanyahu ahead of time and didn’t just spring it on him in public.

It was talked about weeks ago, if you had been paying attention.

I used to think that Israel should try to work out a land-for-peace deal but no more. It’s clear that the Palestinians want only the destruction of Israel. So, it’s time to just move forward with taking the West Bank and Gaza, removing the Palestinian populations as gently as possible to Egypt and Jordan, settling Israelis there, and brace for the blowback. Else we’ll have another 50 years of this nonsense. I say force the outcome.

Haven’t settlements always been a way to pressure the Arabs into land for peace

“I really hope that President Trump talked about that with Netanyahu ahead of time and didn’t just spring it on him in public.”

In international diplomacy, no policy is ever first mentioned in a press conference.

It is always hammered out way ahead of time.

How's that been working so far?

I'm getting a little disappointed in Trump. It is none of his business what Netanyahu does with his own Country. Trump is wrong to but his nose into Israel’s building the settlements business.

This seems like a smart, pre-negotiated tactic.

Trump has been very supportive of Israel. Everyone knows that. There is no doubt.
But is Trump totally “in the bag” for Israel? Is he Netanyahu’s “puppet”?

Clearly not. Here he is, asking Israel to hold back and — you know — trying to be fair to all parties as he seeks a peaceful solution.

I see no problem.

If you watched the whole thing you’ll be fine with this. It was a total love fear. Bibi said they’ll talk about this so hey don’t keep stepping on eachothers feet on this ...He pointed to Trump and said, the art of the deal!. Trump has a real friend in bibi and vise versa

If you listened to the whole discussion, you’d hear them both say they were working on a deal...

In fact, Bibi said himself, “It’s the art of the deal.” and they both laughed....

Netanyahu should 'hold back' on settlements

"...for a little bit".

I think Trump suspects that the Pali's don't want Israel. He'll give them one more quick chance.

Trump did not say settlements are illegal.

Nor did he reiterate the US call for a Palestinian Arab state on the 1967 lines.

FWIW, fake news CNN whined Trump took questions from conservative media Christian Broadcasting Network and Townhall.

How dare he! ;-)

As long as Netanyahu cashes our foreign aid check, it is President Trump’s business.

This is CNN - so lets look for what they left OUT!

I’d wager that President Trump asked the Prime Minister to hold back so that he has a chance to get a deal through - the palis will refuse to even talk if Israel is actively building. I doubt seriously that that request extended farther than that.

I’ll wait for a source that actually reports news instead of cherry picks quotes.
