Allowing third generation residents, who have to be acculturated, speak a local language, and be self-supporting to become citizens, and who are less than 1% of the population, does not seem to be a suicide note.
But then, allowing women to vote was supposed to be harmless as well.
IMO this could be called "allowing the camel to get its nose under the tent".
