A special assembly elected former German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier by an overwhelming majority Sunday to be the countrys new president.
Steinmeier was elected in Berlin by the assembly made up of the 630 members of parliaments lower house and an equal number of representatives from Germanys 16 states.
He received 931 of the 1,260 votes. Steinmeier succeeds Joachim Gauck, a 77-year-old former pastor and East German pro-democracy activist who did not seek a second five-year term because of his age. [ ]
Isnt it actually wonderful that this Germany, our difficult fatherland, that this country has become an anchor of hope in the world for many, after overcoming wars and totalitarianism, Steinmeier said.

Alrighty then......
Read German Pres Glauk’s background. At age 11, father (Naval Officer) taken by the communists to gulag in 1951 from dinner table for 4 years. Stalked by stasi until 1989. Elected to be stasi hunter in 1990.
Interesting background.
Agree with “anchor”, but not with “hope”.
The anchor of which he speaks will drag Germany into the depth of depravity only reached by Muslim countries.
Sounds like Merkel’s brother-in-outlaw. (Or sister, as the acse may become.)
Very interesting. Thanks for posting.
In 2016 Steinmeier described U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump as a “hate preacher.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank-Walter_Steinmeier
Steinmeier voiced his support for Barack Obama when Obama was still a presidential candidate, and supported Obama's wish to deliver a speech before the iconic Brandenburg Gate during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. In 2016 Steinmeier described U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump as a "hate preacher." After Trump's election, Steinmeier refused to congratulate him, and condemned Trump's views. He has been described as "the German government's most strident detractor" of Trump. He later said he was "appalled" by the 2016 U.S. election.
Hope?
Right! They brought a lot of hope to Germany.
German citizens hope the muslim savages don’t gang rape their little daughters to death.
And they hope the muslims don’t slaughter the rest of them for Muhammid.
Who IS that dancing? Merkel?? Unreal!
1995 on a vacation in Greece.
Yikes
His positions are far to the left but he’s called “right-wing.”
A social democrat like Steinmeier is called “right wing”? Or are you referring to Gauck?
The German President is a ceremonial head of state.
Under Weimar, he had strong executive powers and was popularly elected.
Executive power is now invested in the Federal Chancellor, the German equivalent of Prime Minister in other countries.
Heh... those East German dance moves are really, um, well - I see what Lena Dunham’s inspiration is, now.
Most parliamentary systems that abolished the monarchy replaced the monarch with the (usually popularly-elected) president, who performs similar ceremonial functions to the monarch, e.g. convene/dissolve the parliament, sign bills into law et al. I often get the impression that it was/is in mockery of the USA, just like most dictators like to assume the title of “president” too.
Yuk!
