Elizabeth Warren silenced on Senate floor after quoting Coretta Scott King

In a rare move, the Senate voted late Tuesday to silence Sen. Elizabeth Warren from speaking out against Sen. Jeff Sessions, President Trump’s nominee for attorney general.

The Republican-led Senate voted 49-43 to uphold a floor ruling that Warren (D-Mass.) violated Senate Rule 19 by “impugning” the character of Sessions during her lengthy speech against his confirmation. A separate vote to allow Warren to continue to speak failed — effectively silencing the outspoken progressive from continuing her anti-Sessions speech.

The dust-up on the Senate floor began shortly before 7 p.m. when Warren took the microphone to make a long, impassioned speech on why Sessions shouldn’t be confirmed as attorney general. She read from past statements from critics who successfully opposed his 1986 nomination for a federal judgeship over concerns he was racially insensitive.

She earned a warning by 7:20 p.m. from the presiding Senate leader — Montana Sen. Steve Daines — when she quoted Sen. Ted Kennedy as calling Sessions “a disgrace.” He reminded her of Rule 19, which says a senator shall not “impute” another senator’s conduct or motives.

Warren was permitted to continue, but got in hot water again for reading a 1986 letter from Coretta Scott King that opposed Sessions.

By 7:47 p.m., Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell interrupted Warren.

“The senator has impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama, as warned by the chair,” McConnell said.

“. . . false. She was silenced for impugning the motives of another Senator...Rule 19. . . . “

Yes.

Let us stick to the facts:

(Just as a drunk driver is isn’t arrested ‘after quoting from Coretta Scott King...’)

From a liberal source:

“Warren offered a blistering speech against Sessions from the Senate floor, arguing he wouldn’t stand up to Trump’s ‘campaign of bigotry.’

“ ‘He made derogatory and racist comments that should have no place in our justice system,’ she said. ‘To put Sen. Sessions in charge of the Department of Justice is an insult to African-Americans.’ “

*She was banned for her words, not the speech she read from.*

It is dishonest of Fox25 Boston (whose coverage I just watched) and this article to claim otherwise.

It is, additionally, intentionally dishonest of them.

I wish there were some legal redress.

Warren asks "Quoting Sen. Kennedy's remarks against then nominee Sessions is against the rules? It certainly wasn't in 1986..."

The difference is that in 1986, Sessions was not a sitting Senator when Kennedy spoke.

Yea but did Warren know that? I mean, she's not too bright.

The Coretta Scott King letter Elizabeth Warren was trying to read

I think this is about the case that Sessions, as Alabama Attorney General, was asked to wrap up that involved forged absentee ballots. In that case, several black defendants admitted to altering the votes on absentee ballots, and were found out when a black victim found out that their ballot vote for a family member was changed to a vote for the opponent.

Typically, Sessions was accused of blocking access to the ballot for African-Americans, when it was black-on-black voter fraud that he was trying to prosecute.

Regarding the Kennedy letter, consider that everything that Kennedy did was hyper-partisan to the nth power.

Corretta King’s “letter” is a disgusting, lie-filled smear, and ought to be denounced.
