Moscow to host pan-Kurdish conference on February 15 (one without Turkey)

A pan-Kurdish national conference will be held in Moscow on 15 February with the participation of Kurds from Iran, Turkey, Iraq and Syria.

Abdulsalam Ali, a member of the Democratic Union Party in Syria (PYD), said that they would discuss the current situation in the Middle East and the divisions of zones of influence in the region.

Among the participants in the meetings are PYD-co head Asya Abdulla, the president of the Kobani local administration Anwar Muslim, and the former mayor of Diyarbakir Osman Baydemir.

Representatives of Kurdish parties in Iran and Iraq will also participate in the meeting. But it’s unclear which parties from Iranian and Iraqi Kurdistan will be invited.

In late January, members of the Democratic Union Party were invited to Moscow by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss the future of Syria and results of the ceasefire talks in Astana.

Although Russia says the PYD should be included in the peace talks in Geneva, the Syrian opposition and Turkey made it clear that they do not want the PYD to be included in any peace talks.

Nevertheless, Russian officials held several meetings with PYD official both in Syria and in Moscow.

There were attempts in the past to hold a national Kurdish conference in Iraqi Kurdistan. However, due to differences between the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the conference was delayed indefinitely.

In the last few months, the PKK has called for holding a Kurdish conference. But it’s unlikely that the main Kurdish parties, the PKK and KDP, can reach an agreement over holding such a conference due to ongoing tensions over power-sharing and territory in Sinjar in northern Iraq, and the Kurdish areas of Syria –known as Rojava.

MOSCOW,— Farhat Patiev, the head of the Council of the Federal National-Cultural Kurdish Autonomy in Russia stated that the leaders of Syrian Kurdistan as well as Kurds from other parts of historic Kurdistan will visit Moscow on February 15 for a conference on the Middle East

The leaders of Syrian Kurdistan, namely, Asya Abdullah, the co-chair of Democratic Union Party (PYD), and Anwar Muslim, the chairman of the Kobani provincial government, will visit Moscow on February 15 for a conference on the Middle East, the head of the Council of the Federal National-Cultural Kurdish Autonomy in Russia told Sputnik Monday.

Farhat Patiev said that the conference would also be attended by Kurds from other parts of historic Kurdistan: in Turkish Kurdistan, Iraqi Kurdistan and Iranian Kurdistan.

In particular, Turkish Kurdistan will be represented by a former mayor of Turkish Kurdish-dominated southeastern city of Diyarbakir and lawmaker from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Osman Baydemir.

Kurdish politicians are expected to meet with Russian counterparts and give a press conference following the event.

There was a recent international conference concerning this, but Kurds were not invited. I hope this is productive.

With a possible developing cooperation of the US (under Trump) and Russia, I hope this is a step toward a solution other than what Erdogan wants, Conquest.

Russia is familiar with the concept of homelands for well-defined ethnic groups (”nationalities”). Within the Russian federation, there are Oblasts (”provinces”) and “Republics.” The Republics have a lmore leeway than the Oblasts. They can, for example, adopt a second official language and teach the history of their people in their schools.

Can there be such Republics in Syria and Iraq? Maybe and maybe not. And, if there can be a Kurdish Republics in Syria and Iraq, could there be Sunni Republics in those two countries?

Or, should two new countries be formed - one for the Kurds of present-day Syria and Iraq, and another for the Sunni of present-day Syria and Iraq?

Turkey and Iran are nervous about this because Turkey fears Kurdish separatists in eastern Turkey, and Iran fears Kurdish separatists in western Iran. Iran also has potential problems with Azeris in northwestern Iran, and Arabs in southwestern Iran.

The bottom line is this: In Syria and Iraq the national government was unable to defend the Kurds or the Sunnis from ISIS and, furthermore, the Shiite governments of those countries have been engaged in discrimination to various degrees against the Sunnis. It can therefore be said that the national governments of those countries have forfeited any claim over the regions of those people.

Yes, you are correct on Putin’s motives.

It would be a no brainer if Erdogan was sane. He is not. And his arrogance will eventually devour him. I hope it happens before Turkey is damaged past repair.

His losses in al Bab are huge and the damage to the city is too.

Not sure how he will extract himself from that quicksand. Possibly as the Syrian army move further in, he will just leave.

Report is that he has lost 54 tanks there. And unspecified human loss. Combatant and non-Combatant.

And he has an election soon, but the opposition party candidates are all in jail.

Putin makes outreach to Kurds - will they see him as better choice for their than the U.S. ? ......................... I don’t see Putin as a major arms supplier for them, (Under the table via a 3rd party, maybe.) because he doesn’t want to upset the gas agreement with Turkey. Obumer, wasn’t going to go over board with aid to them other than some token help. The Kurds are a head ache to the Turks, Iranians, Syrians and Iraqis, and are being denied their own land, most likely because of oil deposits. Thank you Britain and France for carving up the mid east. I wonder if the political driven MSM would back accepting Kurds coming into the USA instead of the 7 banned countries?

I think in the latter part of his regime Obama did ramp up military aid and covert advisor insertions to the Kurds willing to fight under the banner of the “ SDF” ( Syrian Democratic Forces) - because face it, the Kurds actually fought IS while the remnants of the FSA either dropped their weapons and ran or defected to ISIS

Now what was the US quid pro quo to the Kurds for their services? Somehow I doubt promising them cabinet positions in a new Syrian government in Damascus would be much enticement. Autonomy or more would have always been the end game - and with IS being wiped out the end game is coming closer

Can or would the US reward the Kurds for their services over the objections of Turkey? Turkey already triangulating with the Russians over mistrust or paranoia about US backing for Gulen

If anyone can pull this situation out of chaos it will have to be US and Russia working together and strong arming Turkey Saudi and Iran into going along

Of course a good chunk of the US military- political establishment will oppose this at every opportunity - too much they have invested into the regional strategic framework of US-NATO good / Putin - Russia-Assad bad

Trump Mattis Tillerson and Pompeo need to do some major housecleaning in the pentagon state department and intelligence community or they could end up being undermined or worse by their so- called subordinates

This is not a drill

I have less confidence in Tillerson than Trump seems to have but what do I know!

The Independent Republic of Kurdistan would be one of the best friends we could have there besides Israel.

And if accepted by the West for Kurdistan, then why not Crimea ........................ Crimea? That would be like the USA giving NY to Russia for helping us win WW II. Crimea was Russia’s gift to Ukraine for their contribution towards winning WW II. It appears Khrushchev didn’t ask for approval of all the Russians that lived in the area before he presented Ukraine with the gift.
