Rolling blackouts ordered as Adelaide swelters in heatwave ('green' energy fails in 100+ heat)
Adelaide Advertiser ^ | 8th February 2017 | Ben Harvey, Tory Shepherd

SA POWER Networks was ordered on Wednesday night to restore electricity to about 40,000 households and businesses after supplies were deliberately cut amid soaring temperatures.

Power to customers across the state was switched off from 6.33pm under “rotational load shedding" orders from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) “due to lack of available generation supply in SA”, SA Power Networks said.

About 45 minutes later electricity was restored after SA Power Networks announced that AEMO had ordered it to return supply.

“AEMO has called an end to load shedding, we are restoring power," the supplier said.

As customers reacted with outrage, the blame game immediately began.

State Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis said: “Every South Australian has a right to be angry. We had spare capacity in the SA generation market and the market didn’t turn that generation on.”

.....

The temperature was still above 40C when the rolling blackouts began at 6.33pm to conserve power supplies as homeowners used airconditioners for relief from the heat.

SA’s power reliability will again be under scrutiny given a series of major blackouts, including a statewide failure in September.

South Australia has embraced the idea of 'green' renewable energy in a big way. It relies heavily on wind generation for its power needs. And it recently demolished one perfectly good coal power plant and is in the process of demolishing a second, that could have been used to provide power security for the state.

The switch to wind power is proving to be a disaster - all in the name of environmentalism.

It's not that the idea of renewable energy is inherently bad - if it can to work, great - cheap, clean energy would be a wonderful thing.

But they are pursuing it at the expense of common sense and with an inordinate amount of faith that nothing will go wrong.

Here, it looks very much like they chose to start rolling blackouts rather than activate a natural gas power station that was entirely ready to come online - so obsessed are they with their clean energy goals.

I wonder if any Governmental orother left wing “elites” had to suffer without power.

All in the name of a theory that has not been proven.

The cut back of fossil fuels in Australia have no significant effect, even in the silly computer models of those promoting the scare.

This shows how dangerous the concentration of media power in the hands of “progressives” has become, especially in Australia.

I suspect that alternative media is gaining ground there. At least I hope it is.

Sounds like a good place to get your own solar cells and battery backup. This is where going self sufficient in solar power pays off. It’s not about saving money. It’s about having power when the system lets you down.

That's pure insanity. All that coal in NSW ... the greenies refusing to use it is criminal.

I'm certainly no expert on such things but IMO there just might be parts of the world where solar power makes sense *today*.It seems possible to me that sometime in the future (if equipment prices go down) it might make sense in many places but *today*:

1)Parts of Australia.I've been to the Outback and there's lots and lots of open space and lots and *lots* of sunshine there. And being fairly close to the equator helps too.

2)The Arabian Peninsula.I've been there too...and ditto the Outback. If anything, there's even *more* sunshine there.

Solar is a great idea in Australia - lots of people are getting panels on their homes and selling excess power back into the system. Not so many getting battery backups yet, but I can see that becoming more popular.

And wind has its place as well.

But you need electricity when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining. And the SA government seems to be dropping the ball on that in a big way.

Solar is taking off in Australia - a lot of people are putting panels on their roofs and generating a lot of their own electricity that way, and selling anything excess back into the grid. Haven’t done it myself (our roof apparently isn’t right for it - faces the wrong direction) but solar certainly has a role to play.

So does wind.

But the technology isn’t there yet to rely on these without the backups of proven technologies - and that’s where South Australia seems to be falling down.

It was at night. A battery would probably power and air conditioner for about ten minutes.

How did we possibly live without central air conditioning or did civilization begin in the 1950’s when A/C became affordable?

Yep. That’s why batteries are in order.

I agree, solar and bat tries work in some places. The fools in Maine VT and NH who try to push solar and wind are fools.

I have a friend that does solar power system installs and sales. His systems include a LOT of batteries.

6:33 pm is NOT night anywhere on earth in the summertime. It was still 100+ degrees, and the supplier shut off the power for 45 minutes, even though they had the capacity available.

This was a borderline criminal act, people could have been seriously injured. If you’ve ever had heatstroke you’d know what I mean, because you never fully recover your resilience after a bout with hyperthermia.

This is going to motivate people to by cheap dirty generators that will pollute worse than that coal plant ever did.

You could always use the energy for producing synthetic fuels that can be made available on demand, rather than foolishly using it in applications where demand is immediate and continuous.

The Scots did the exact same thing and had the exact same problem when the “never ending” North Sea winds just stopped blowing and the back up plants had been torn down - probably to make room for a “Peace Park.”

Many older people can't tolerate very high temperatures - air conditioning is their lifeline. Cutting off power in a heatwave is going to cost lives, sacrificed on the altar of the enviro-cult.
