(Washington, D.C.) Today, the Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education in a tie vote of 50-50, broken by Vice President Mike Pence. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), the Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, led Senate Democrats in a 24-hour final debate prior to todays vote. Senator Murray released the following statement after DeVos confirmation, ensuring that this is not the end of the story, and that the fight to defend strong public education will go on.

More importantly, the teachers’ unions lost bigly today!
Wonderful!...This shows how out of touch with reality Osama Mama is, maybe she’ll fight as hard against Secretary DeVos as she did for bin Laden’s day care centers. LOL
Unfortunately, I am unlucky to have Murray (and Cantwell) as my senators. Murray was, is, and always has been a tool of the teacher’s unions.
Translation: "NEA, please keep funneling your members dues to my 're-election fund' ".
You know, Patti Murray should serve as an encouragement to people everywhere.
Even if you are the dumbest SOB in the country, so incompetent that you could screw up a county fair, you can still always run for congress.
YES to publicly funded, or tax-rebate funded, education. NO to education as a no-choice government monopoly.
The nuke danger list, IMHO.

Patty, Lisa, Elizabeth and Susan all lost big today.
I am hoping DeVos makes the Dept of Education a thing of the past.
I wonder if anyone knows about the educational choices made by the Senators who voted again Devos. Most or all of them have had children, and if they are like
others in their social strata I would guess most did not send their children to public schools, either in their home states DC. But does anyone know if a list has been compiled that addresses this question?
Rumor has it Murray was a Kindergarten Teacher before her political life.
My question is if she passed kindergarten how many tries did it take her.
I’ve heard magpie’s speak with more intelligence
I would love to see every dem voter locked up in a room with their dem senators for an hour - no way to escape...sit there and listen to their drivel. If they aren’t ready to surrender in one hour, extend it to two and keep going. It is a fate worse than death to listen to these people - Leahy can’t get his tongue out of the way to even speak like a normal human being, Murray is like listening to fingernails on a blackboard, Blumenthal - well, what on earth could anyone say about Blumenthal except - HELP PLEASE!!!! And Franken - good grief - SEND MORE HELP!
Go piss up a rope bitch.
You know, Patti Murray should serve as an encouragement to people everywhere.
Well said, JamesP81 !
the same mutt what said:
“We’ve got to ask, why is this man (Osama bin Laden) so popular around the world?,” said Murray, who faces re-election in 2004. “Why are people so supportive of him in many countries . . . that are riddled with poverty?
“He’s been out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. We haven’t done that.
“How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Iraq and go to Afghanistan?”
Why should she care about Secretary of Education. It’s too late for Patti to ever become educated.
Besides, Patti Murray already owns a Federal Judge . . . Judge Robart is her own boy toy and will say whatever she wants.
The two defectors were Susan Collins, of Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska.
Last Sunday was the first time a Super Bowl went into overtime. Today was the first time the Vice President needed to break a tie on a cabinet nomination.
There isn’t anything I have that has not been made better by competition. It is time to permit competition to improve the educational system.
