Irwin Corey, comic who styled himself the World’s Foremost Authority, dies at 102

Irwin Corey, the comic maestro who endeared himself to generations of audiences as the World’s Foremost Authority, whose nonsensical monologues aped blowhard pundits, pompous academics and other know-it-alls, died Feb. 6 at his home in Manhattan. He was 102.

His son, painter, songwriter, singer and comedian Richard Corey, quipped that his father died “peacefully, at home, surrounded by his son.”

Under the moniker Professor Corey, the self-described rebel comedian spent eight decades perfecting a mock-intellectual routine laced with malapropisms and non sequiturs.

He was pretty funny. He should have been in politics. He’d have given any Dem a run for their money. They would have considered him a genius.

Ah, yes, I can remember watching Professor Irwin Corey on any number of variety shows during the 60s ... off-the-wall stuff. Kind of like an early-TV version of Robin Williams.

"His son, painter, songwriter, singer and comedian Richard Corey..."... must be a different Richard Corey ...

They say that Richard Corey owns one half of this whole town,
With political connections to spread his wealth around.
Born into society, a banker's only child,
He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style.

Yes he was funny.

In his last years he solicited money on the streets in NYC and sent it to Cuba.

I guess he was not an authority on freedom and capitalism. just another socialist kook.

RIP.

"The New York Times has done an expose of the guy. He lives in a three-and-a-half-million-dollar apartment. He's not homeless, it's just part of his schtick, but he's a well-known anarchist, communist. There are pictures of him with Castro handing over money to this children's charity there."

He would do a great RIP, I’ll bet. Thanks for all the entertainment, Professor. Heaven has a new stand-up routine. Prayers for all your son.

There were some really funny comics back then. Who was the guy who talk, and you couldn’t understand what he was saying, but you’d swear he was saying something? They had him on Candid Camera giving a lecture to students, and they were taking notes, and the guy wasn’t saying anything comprehensible.

“In his last years he solicited money on the streets in NYC and sent it to Cuba.”

While I can’t speak for everybody, I imagine people’s opinions on Cuba were different when they were old enough to have visited it before the embargo.

I loved that guy — especially when he would come on Johnny Carson! God bless his soul and his loved ones.

I loved Pete Barbutti on Carson also. Who was the guy who could spell a word backwards?
