Washington (CNN)Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska both said Wednesday they would not vote to support Betsy DeVos, President Donald Trump's choice for education secretary. The two women are the first sitting Republican senators to publicly say they wouldn't back one of Trump's Cabinet nominees. The stunning decision from a pair of veteran Republican lawmakers puts DeVos in a tenuous position as her final vote before the Senate nears, but top Republican aides are confident she will be confirmed.

They wouldn’t be allowed to do this unless they promised to do something to make up for it.

Vote for filibuster reform is my guess.

When Murkowski won re-election against the West Point guy I was extremely disappointed. She may vote against Gorsuch as well

The swamp is much deeper and wider than even the President realized. He will have to go to war with these RINOs in the next three Senate election cycles.

Yes, and I am so tired of RINOs.

Hopefully they’ll be extinct in 2 years.

Maine and Alaska Republicans need to start promoting a candidate to run against these two witches in their next primaries.

Freepers who live in these states should waste no time in contacting these morons and letting them know that you expect them to vote for all of Trump’s nominees. Get everyone else you know who is willing to contact them, also.

Politicians estimate that for every 1 person they hear from at least 100 other people hold the same opinion. It’s easy to send a quick email.

Fine, then Trump should announce that the Department will be abolished and all education turned over to the states.

The Federal Government has NO BUSINESS being involved in any aspect of education.

This is how I hope he handles it. He says, the department was there to help the executive branch implement policy for education. I cannot implement my policy as the department is and so it will be redundant to the education committee that I am creating to bring education back to local communities, headed by Betsy Devos. The Department of Education is hereby abolished. Oh man, the anger on the left and the squishy Republicans would be glorious indeed. They don’t seem to get that their argument is with Trump (and they’ve lost it). Any cabinet member he gets confirmed will be there to get Trump’s policies passed.

The article doesn’t make clear whether Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski - Thanks, Alaskans, you had the chance to pick Joe Miller - were voting against DeVos for her record in Michigan. An accompanying video points out an apparently spotty record for Michigan’s charter schools.

as long as no one else goes squishy. You never know with Republicans. A little bit of adversity and they scatter.

Both senators should be stripped of committee assignment if they fail to stand with the Republican party.
