Trump: I will tell McConnell to 'go nuclear' if Democrats hold up Gorsuch nomination

President Donald Trump said he will urge Senate Republicans to scrap filibuster rules, or take the so-called "nuclear option," if Democrats in the increasingly tense chamber use them to block his nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

After Trump nominated the 49-year-old conservative appeals judge to the top U.S. court Tuesday night, Democrats signaled they could delay the process. If they filibuster, Republicans, who have 52 Senate seats, would need 60 votes to confirm him unless they cut that rule.

Trump told reporters Wednesday that he would encourage Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to take that route, which would require only a simple majority.

"Yes, if we end up with the same gridlock that they've had in Washington ... if we end up with that gridlock, I'd say, if you can, Mitch, go nuclear. Because that would be an absolute shame if a man of this quality was caught up in this web," Trump said at the White House.

Trump's choice sets up a second straight year of bitter partisanship over the court seat, which was left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia last year. Then-President Barack Obama nominated Washington, D.C. appeals judge Merrick Garland for the spot, but the Republican-controlled Senate never held a vote on him.

Well, McConnell has said CLEARLY that the nominee for SC will be approved. Period.

We will see if he actually is a man of his word.

“....Mitch aka El Foldo? Go Nukular?? U kidding.. and upset the coal cash gravy train??...”

Yeah. The old Turtle is in a pretty tight spot right now.
He has to decide: Trump or UniParty. I suspect whoever he fears the most is where he’ll lean towards....all of that along with the “coal cash gravy” in the back of his mind.
Yeah....wouldn’t want to be him.

This is a good negotiating strategy for Trump, by the way.

Now the Dem Senators most threatened in 2018 have to ask themselves why they should bother to join a filibuster and anger their constituents when it’s all going to come to naught anyway. They’re now more likely to just get on board and approve a well-qualified nominee.

Stop the “high tech lynching” of honorable men. Putting McConnell’s wife in the Cabinet greased the skids for the Supreme Court showdown.

As quoted here, the President is suggesting to McConnell to use the nuclear option, IF POSSIBLE. Very different then TELLING McConnell what to do.

Dems are folding up. They are capitulating rapidly. They have no resolve and are totally demoralized. We need to move forward on our 100 new federal judges ASAP .

The title makes it seem like he’s giving the Turtle an order, when he really isn’t.

Using the word 'nuclear' is ok, but I think because it draws such vitriol from the left he should use this phrase instead. He should term it, 'Democrat Harry Reid's option'.

That way everyone, even the news dummies can't confuse it's origin.

`Filibuster’ is a word with Dutch roots. It means `pirate’.

If they threaten it, make them actually do it—24/7, no breaks or adjournments.

After the American people get a good dose of their prima donna petulance, make them walk the plank: nuke `em.

All the Democrats understand is strength. While patting him on the back and having their MSM praise him, they have nothing but contempt for GOP-ers like McCain.
