If they can verify that the refugees did aid the US, that’s great. The private sector should its part for those who endangered their lives and their loved ones to help us. I doubt there were quite as many as he intends to hire though.

95 Million Americans out of the workforce and Starbucks is going to give positive bias to non-Americans.

Nice to blatantly tell America where your loyalties lie

HAHA! Oh, this is special! Starbucks just replaced 10,000 new American jobs with immigrants. Now how anti-American is that!! Gotta love these idiotic libtards for shooting themselves in the foot.

In 9other words, your local neighborhood Starbucks is going to look like the average 7/11 or Circle K - with service to match.

Besides, they are cutting off thousands of liberal-arts, liberally educated college graduates from their likely career path.

If Starbucks hires them in stores outside this country, who cares?

If they hire refugees that are legally in this country, nuttin wrong with that but Starbucks is displaying a bad attitude.

If they hire refugees that are legally in this country, nuttin wrong with that...

Not if they hire them preferentially above other equally qualified candidates.

SBux has roughly 150,000 employees in the US. Suppose that 5000 of the 10,000 are hired in the US. Given a reasonable guess at turnover, the hiring goal will only be possible if there's a quota list for the racial and ethnic makeup of the workforce. That ought to be illegal--at least it became illegal after the Civil Rights Movement.

I used to sometimes give Starbucks gift cards as gifts, but no more. I will use up my last gift card and then patronize other places like Peet’s and Coffee Bean. I won’t participate in funding someone who goes out of his way to discriminate against Americans.

Re: the hiring would apply to stores worldwide and the effort would start in the United States where where the focus would be on hiring immigrants “who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel.”

I think Shultz starts off with a disingenuous statement meant to sidetrack opposition by saying the first people hired will be those who served with US troops. What percentage of the refugees actually fit those qualifications? I don't imagine that even 1% of the refugees actually helped serve as interpreters and support personnel. (And if they did help our military they deserve better than a job at Starbucks.) Since the pickings will be slim Starbucks can then move on to giving all Muslim immigrants preferential hiring status. Move over Black, White, Hispanic Americans. Go to the back of the hiring line.

Agree. Being legal, and a past US troop helper is a standout qualification.

You are right that he is being disingenuous, and using that as a stalking horse to make PC talking points.

Maybe starbucks should move their headquarters to Syria. I hear they have lots of people who need jobs. And, as marie harf has said, gainful employment will end terrorism.

Anything’s possible. Marie Harf works for FOX now—maybe that job will keep her from terrorist activity.

“the hiring goal will only be possible if there’s a quota list for the racial and ethnic makeup of the workforce”

I see what you mean.

Starbucks must have calculated that most of their customers support their stated intention.

In any event, Starbucks is making a foray into politics. Lotsa luck, Starbucks.

I’m pretty sure it would be illegal to discriminate in hiring in the United States on the basis of national origin. I imagine the first black american who is denied a job for a white Iranian will have a successful lawsuit.

As to other countries, Starbucks can hire anybody they want for those jobs, as far as I’m concerned. If those countries want their local employers to discriminate against their own citizens, that’s their choice.
