During a memorial service for a victim of criminal gun violence on the South Side of Chicago, six people were shot including a 12-year-old girl.
Community activist Jedidiah Brown told reporters that "the opposition" to those attending the memorial came through an alley before opening fire on the group of mourners. He added that the mother of the person being memorialized was also among the victims, though police have not confirmed that information.A 12-year-old girl suffered a graze wound to the head from a bullet, police said, and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where her condition had stabilized.
Four of the victims are in stable condition while two remain in serious condition.
“I’m asking that those individuals who may see this, that are planning retaliation right now, that you stand down from that and that we look for peaceful alternatives,” Brown said.
Police have not made any arrests yet.

President Trump recently threatened Chicago with federal interference if the city couldn't get its gun-violence problem under control.

The only thing that will work is intensive proactive police patrols to get the illegal guns before they are used AND the ability of the prosecutor to get long sentences.
The offer of help from the Federal Government will be essential if they give investigative help AND use Federal Sentencing Guidelines to put these criminals away for a long time. Get caught with Controlled Substances and a firearm, then for Life.
Federal help would be most effective with prosecution in Federal Courts. This really helped reduce gang activity in Central Illinois a few years ago.
And no mamby pamby pardons from so called Presidents!

Felons are caught every day with guns. It’s a Federal felony, as is the ammo. The Feds generally don’t enforce it since supposedly they will be prosecuted for other crimes at the state level. They need to either start prosecuting real criminals caught using a gun in a crime under the statute, or repeal it. As it is now, it’s only used against people who haven’t committed any other crime than being a banned person with a gun. Exactly ass backward.
Nothing is going to stop this violence until people take responsibility for themselves and their children. School choice will help, but until the people in these areas stop having kids with no fathers around and deal in drugs, the violence will continue.
