“Trump is smarter than you and me and I trust he won’t authorize another financial loser ;)”

The market is smarter than anyone and if the market could support a profitable high speed rail line between Houston and Dallas, private industry would meet the demand of that market.

Markets Rule!

Another point. In principle, why should the government be competing with private businesses. Subsidized high speed rail could under price the airlines and take away some of their most profitable routes.

Yes, Economics is very easy to understand.

Another family tale was that Horatio Gates was a fool but very political, tried to take credit for Kings Mountain when he was nowhere to be found and had nothing to do with it at all, that he was the source of scurrilous tales of “atrocities” committed upon British and Tory prisoners from Kings Mountain being taken to the stockade at Bethabara (Moravian Old Town) for holding, then on to Hillsborough for trial. Intentionally smeared their reputation. Admittedly it was a rough bunch with a grudge, looking to even the score as you say. But, Cleveland and Winston were good commanders, they did not allow any such thing and did not deserve that kind of dishonorable talk, nor did the regulars and dragoons.

>> There are no passenger rail lines ion the entire United States that make a profit.

They’re not designed to turn a profit. And no investments made in the name of public transportation are held to reasonable standards. It’s a gig.

In all honesty, if Trump continues on this trajectory and keeps his promises, he could surpass Coolidge and Reagan and be the greatest President since Lincoln.

And the GOP could get to 60 Senate seats in 2018. Easily.

There are 33 Senate seats up for reelection in 2018 — and just eight are held by Republicans.

Agreed! That should be the standard on which it is determined.

Southwest Airlines makes a profit with flights from Houston to Dallas.

I had ancestors involved in the militia fighting in South Carolina, including the John Carroll mentioned in this piece:

I’m a Carroll descendant myself through my paternal grandmother. Do you know the origin of your Carroll line? Mine came down from Maryland but no record indicating that they were ever Catholic, reference being to the Carrolls of Carrollton.

Wow $85,000 an acre and 2500 sq feet. That’s a lot of money. What happened to the tiny house?

We looked at a house in Bandera last summer. Needed some updating but was fine as it was and had half an acre. Asking $165,000 at that time. Understand it was purchased, updated and flipped for $285,000. Not sure what we are going to do but sure don’t want to go in debt again.

BTW-How much would you expect a round trip ticket aboard Federal High Speed Rail would cost?”

Seems like the price we saw was around $90 one way, or maybe slightly less. Think they would have to be able to compete with Southwest Airlines fare. Even if that is a little more, would be a lot easier to deal with going on the train rather than go through the hassle at the airport and likely take less time overall. Even when we flew everywhere, we always drove from Houston to Dallas because it was just less hassle and portal to portal didn’t take any more time.

“Seems like the price we saw was around $90 one way, or maybe slightly less. Think they would have to be able to compete with Southwest Airlines fare.”

1. Southwest Airlines is not subsidized by the federal government.

2. Currently, with Amtrak, each time a passenger steps on an Amtrak train, the federal government (that would be the tax payer), subsidizes the cost of that rider around $70.00.

Now, please explain to my why I as a tax payer should subsidize your ride on the Federal High Speed Rail for at least $70.00 when you can use your own hard earned money and buy a non-subsidized ticket on Southwest Airlines.

And why do you think the hard working people at Southwest Airlines should have to compete with a heavily subsidized train?

I don’t have any real knowledge of the family’s whereabouts before Colonial South Carolina.

There is a story on Rootsweb saying that the Carrolls of SC are descended from a soldier in the service of William of Orange at the Battle of River Boyne who was given a land grant in the York District.

I have very mixed feelings on “infrastructure projects”, many of which are just pork. However, if President Trump cuts spending elsewhere, waste mixed with some good decisions in this area is a small price to pay for the right decisions on Obamacare, immigration, and other areas.

One project that I hope will make the final list is replacing lead service pipes in cities. Like many things we spend money on, that’s not a federal responsibility. However, the cities and states have failed in that area for decades. President Trump should do the right thing and eliminate lead service pipes as a problem, and the bonus is that it almost guarantees urban votes and his reelection - an exceptional return on investment!

Dallas to Houston is only an hour flight and about 5 hours driving. High speed rail might make the trip in 2-3 hours, but it would do nothing for all the towns in between.

In Texas, the State and citizens own the land; not the Feds.

I see the high speed rail only happening on new tracks adjacent to existing RR right of way. That WILL provide a lot of jobs and wont involve taking citizens’ farmland or homes.
