"the Great Smog of 1952, which is estimated to have killed 12,000 people. " I read 4000 died elsewhere, but still.

"On Monday London mayor Sadiq Khan issued the highest air pollution alert in London for the first time"

Heads will roll.

I lived in London in the late 80’s and I don’t remember a lot of wood being burned for home heating.

Something doesn’t smell right about this.

Although I could be wrong, I suspect that the “London fog” from coal fires was more unpleasant than the current air pollution caused by wood fires.

Those damn wood-pellet stoves.

Not that it should be terrible for ecosystems, but schadenfreude to those who think it’s better and just have to use it to be “hip”.

probably an atmospheric inversion or some other type of ordinary stilling of the winds around London. They have had a bit of wind this winter, so this calming is ‘on the unusual side’ and the London fogs are nothing like they use to be during WWII and earlier.

Just a political tempest in a Londoner’s tea pot.

An eco-nazi once told me that a wood burning stove is carbon neutral (whatever that means) and thus approved by the central committee. So there you have it.

The Great Smog was caused by the fact London was heated and lighted with coal coupled with a severe inversion.

When I first started traveling to London in the 80's most public buildings were black from the accumulated soot. However in recent years the air has been quite clean and you can see the color of the original stone on the Houses of Parliament. In contrast, some days in Beijing people can't see more than a block.

My B.S. detector is going off. I suspect the socialist/muzzie mayor is after some power grab to "solve" the problem.

I wonder if they have the issue here w/regulation increasing the cost of heating/ac like in the u.s..

Probably cheaper to run wood again.

After a month of relatively mild weather we’ll be able to fire up the wood stove again for an extended period this weekend.

Gotta make my carbon contribution to the atmosphere.

Fake.

They want to make it like California where it is illegal to have a fire in your own fireplace unless the authorities deign to decree it legal on certain days.

No way the pollution is like Beijing.

..and wood burners are making problem worse

Always suspect the underlying agenda - perhaps the catalyst here is someone wants to get rid of the stoves, and as the result of that, found that pollution is bad. That's the way the left always works - they have the solution, just need to tout the problem loud enough so that they can put that solution in place. London has always had chimneys and smog.

Never expected wood burners in London. Where do they stack the wood in those tiny apartments?
